I got some really awesome pictures of my oiran cosplay at Anime North! I wore it for the kimono fashion show and afterwards we all had a bit of a photoshoot.
Here's a photo with me in a kneeling pose. I actually used two obi to tie that knot. The one underneath was tied in a butterfly musubi, then the dragon obi was tied simply over top and allowed to hang over the butterfly bow. Then an obi makura was tied underneath for added volume. Unfortunately, but the time this photo was taken the butterfly bow was saging a bit.

This is something I thought I should clarify after a few of the comments I recieved. I am supposed to be dressed as an oiran/tayu. No, the obi is not on backwards. Yes, oiran and tayu wear their obi tied on the front. Here are some examples: [link] [link]
Now that I've got the longer maru obi in my possession, I think I'd like to try a musubi similar to that last photo. The fukuro obi I used is about half as long. Maybe next year I'll have to reprise this costume.

Honestly, I am getting tired of the whole "obi is on backwards"... coming from someone who has been doing nihon buyou for years, and learned to wear kimono and kimono aesthetics.....I wish people would do their research before assuming... =___=
Now....I'm done with my rant....I apologize, but as I was reading the comments I was like... really? ... REALLY??? O__e
I love your handiwork here! Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship! It looks like you are wearing katsura, and I give you kudos! It is a shame it is so difficult to find katsura in Oiran/Tayuu styles that is more easily accessible to Westerners, and especially ones that are more easily affordable. But because only theaters, actors and geiko/maiko need these types of wigs, there is no need to drop prices on new or used katsura.
I love the kanzashi you have here as well. Absolutely beautiful. ^__^
And! It looks like you purchased real oshiori and kabuki makeup to do this? Or did you use something else? It is hard to really tell from the lighting and not having a super-close up. ^^
Don't mind me, dear. I like to pick at details and point out the finer points in costumes. ^_^ I love making good critiques.
This, overall, is beautiful with what you had to work with and what you had available at your disposal!!!
