Triggerhappy: The drawing style for success (not) by KukuruyoArt Triggerhappy: The drawing style for success (not) by KukuruyoArt

(Versión española)

A new Thundercats series was announced, and the choice for drawing style was hugely rejected by both fans of the series and overall everyone whos tired of series in the last years having the exact same “tumblr” designs. It’s more or less common than in each era most series tend to a similar type of aesthetic, but the problem in this case is that the prevalent drawing is a huge downgrade in quality from the cartoon series of decades back, to the point this is already been called “the dark age” of animation. A big blame on this comes from the CalArts school of animation, in which they teach people to downgrade their drawing quality and draw all in the same fashion; and there’s also the problem of how animation studios now seem to be trying to pander to Tumblr instead of long standing fans or the overall public. If a company makes a reboot of an existing series, is because they want to capitalize on the already existing fans; if not, it would be far better to do a new series for a new public. So fans are, with reason, angry if they completelly change the product, downgrade the quality, fill it with contradictions to the original setting, or outright fuck the original product like The Last Jedi did.

Obviously, this page is a joke and i’m not going to change my style. But holy shit i must say is super easy to draw like this. I haven’t had to pay any attention to body structure, fingers, sizes, or even shadows :p

You can support me on patreon for mature content. I also sell some stuff with my designs; i have a T-shirt store, another one to sell Prints, and my own store where i sell comics and do commissions.

Here's the thing dude the thundercats reboot is going to be a thing no matter what also the Carats style isn't a real thing some just pointed out a small similarity which overall wasn't even that similar, also shows like Steven universe and OK KO were not from calarts they were from a animation college in new york, the reason for the whole art style in the first place is nothing moreqthen storyboard driven animation which involve the animators using storyboards as a script however the overseas animators must follow everything to a T so they prone to some of the storyboards mistakes to prevent this they go with simple design and on model proportions, if you going to cal it shit call it shit on its own individual basis and not involve animators who work hard on these projects

here's a video that represents my personal thoughts

Nah, it looks rather like a very old anime that just got an update, like Osomatsu-san or something like it.

And was made by a 5 year old.

Those boobs are too big and the varying line thickness wastes company resources, are you trying to get your show cancelled and banned from Cartoon Network?!?!

Changing art styles for an iconic series is a bad move.

But if a series has managed to become popular with the calarts style then it is potentially good.

The golden rule here is don't mess with your formula for success.

I'm reserving judgment til the show actually shows up

i once disliked adventure time purely by its appearance
then I watched and ended up loving it

while I do admit that I don't got a good feeling about thundercats
i want to at least see what it's like first

ps awesome comic

I did not like the way that Adventure Time looked either, but the stories and the writing were actually not that bad. A slightly less goofy art style probably would have helped, though.

Yeah but then again the target audience was kids and I hear these simple goofy imagery actually better for kids

If the stories and writing are good then I can't complain

I remember watching cartoons like Heathcliff, Inspector Gadget, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1980s), DuckTales, Tom & Jerry, and the older Looney Tunes when I was a kid. The art team working on ThunderCats Roar could have tried a little harder than this. It should not have taken too much more work to make them look like actual cat-people instead of goblins and still use a simplistic art style. I feel like the art team is doing as little work as they can get away with and hoping that the storywriters can save their asses.

I honestly prefer art/animation to be REALLY detailed, or less cartoonish, even ecchi/harem artists like that guy who does To Love-Ru or the manga version of Darling in The Franxx or Tsunako who made Hyperdimension Neptunia, makes character-body-art I appreciate.....somehow I feel I should be ashamed of that.

So seeing something like this, which's a HUGE downgrade from both versions of the cartoon, makes me go "Is this really happening?"

That said. This thing's definitely gonna be released regardless of how many people disapprove or dislike it. Will probably even get multiple seasons and saying it's popular or great when its not.

It is an original anime, but for whatever the reason they had that guy who makes To Love-Ru make a manga adaptation, which has yet to catch up to the anime episodes

That said, the girls look way curvier than before under the mangaka

Maybe the creator is just trying to punk us. They'd keep doing this to get a whole lot of attention, because to be honest, hate spreads a whole lot more faster. Then a few weeks before the series begins, they show the actual product and it proves to be amazing. XD

The bigger issue that they are dumbing down and kiddifying one of the coolest and most badass 80s cartoons ever.

Just Mumm-Ra's transformation alone tell you how cool the original show was.

I don't personally buy into the tumblr pandering. I think the real reason the animation catches on is because it appeals to very young children, but more importantly, I think it's much cheaper and faster to produce each episode, similar to how South Park used to be able to stay ahead of the relevancy curve with their bare-bones art style. This horrible and degenerated art style is the least amount of effort for the most amount of gain.(Since young kids will still watch the crap)

I think it's a little more complicated. The first time they tried this style it was probably to appease children wih something cheap, but then this style got pretty popular in Tumblr; tumblrites began to use that style till it became synonimus with Tumblr, and artists came out of tumblr to work in animation studios and influence how they're done. So now that artsyle is directly related with tumblr culture.

Thundercats is an old show; making a reboot of an existing show has the intention of, at least partially, capitalize on existing fans, so there's not so much of a reason to do it in an art style that panders to kids. So in this case i would bet is more pandering to adults in tumblr than kids. I mean even Cheetara looks like a tumblr lesbian, and some of the animators are mocking fans on twitter with terms like "mansplaining"; everything to me sounds more "tumblr-like" than "kid-like".

The paradox is that "Teen Titans Go" is critically panned, but is a huge hits wiuth both rating and merchandise, so Cartoon Network is now trying to make lightning strike twice, so to speak.

Really, what bothers isn't the art style in and ofg itself, but how "kiddified" this new show will be. I know the newer WildStorm comics went the other extreme and made everything "dark and edgy", but really.

It's especially insulsting considering how well-received the last Thundercats reboot was.

This made my day. Both your picture and your comment going along with it. Thank you for this. Especially considering how spiteful and downright petty the people behind the show are now. I can't believe that they are surprised that there was a backlash. I agree wholeheartedly on everything you said, also considering The Last Jedi. There seems to be a consensus lately that fans are either the worst and completely unimportant or need to be taught what is "good"...

I think it's easier to draw because you don't make mistakes as easily with such a simple style. Example, in the first panel here, there could have been a point at which you looked at one of the mouths and said "that doesn't look right" - correct me if I'm wrong, but it's waaaaay easier to brush those concerns off with a simplified style like the left one.

Meh, I don't care if they use this boring art style again. But, what baffles me is that they put somebody who hates the previous Thundercats incarnations in charge of this. Is like putting a hydrophobe in charge of an aquapark.

I've seen some tweets from some of the animators and they seem to be full tumblrite types who hate fans and non-tumblr styles, but didn't know the one in charge hates the original series. Thats so absurd to do...

Agreed on most accounts, except for the Last Jedi, which whilst imperfect was a much closer shot to the original Star Wars spirit than the prequel trilogy, while managing to not be a remake like the Force Awakens was.
