Triggerhappy: Realistic fighters by KukuruyoArt Triggerhappy: Realistic fighters by KukuruyoArt

(Versión española)

The argument for “realistic” bodies in videogames, or any media, can be completelly thrown out the window the moment the setting isn’t trying to be realistic. Sexy body types, for both men and women, are there simply to make the product more attractive because people find sexy bodies more attractive to watch, instead of fat people, and any malevolent interpretation of this is just ideology trying to validate itself. But even if we were to accept the premise of having “realistic bodies” in videogames, it could be refute using their own argument, because female martial arts fighters DO HAVE the type of bodies that videogames show. It’s one of those collateral effects of training your body to be a better fighter: you become fit.

The unrealistic thing would be that those fighters would be fat, as ideologes pretend.

Imagine a 200-300 lbs Princess Leia running down the halls of the Death Star as she and the heroes try to escape. Imagine a 200-300 lbs Samus Aran trying to move around in full Battle Armor that probably also weight a good 200-300lbs. . . .and that is just two examples.

Literally everyone I know with that sort of opinion on fighting game gals would actually say something like "Hey, they look like real fit women and not anime sex dolls now! Thank you genie!"

Seriously I like the oversized tiddy plenty, but I don't see why anyone pretends that G-cup breasts and 19 inch waists are a common occurrence in reality. I abuse anatomical exaggeration way worse but I'm not pretending it's realistic.

Well, we do have games with questionable breast physics.  I mean, boobs jiggle, sure, but it's freaky to see breast plates and the like move in tandem with flesh.  Of course, most games that go that far are cheap trash.

I can understand some of them being busty (heck an mma fighter has F cups so it is possible) but it is unrealistic to have all of them being busty, they should really add some variation to the female figures, heck have some muscular women, have some slender women, have some busty women. All I want is some variation in the line up so it doesn't look like a playboy photo shoot instead of a fighting game.

*Did someone say triggered?!?!?!?!

Just kidding, hoping for some discussion.

Obviously girls in fighting games need to be fit. The only problem is when the male characters are clothed head to toe and the female characters are in bikinis. That's my beef.

Male and female sexuality work a little different. Men are attracted to direct stuff, women much less. Think about a close up of a dick. Doesn't look as at attractive as a close up of a bikini.

Women on average are more atracted to arms, wide backs, strong stance, attitude, and other different stuff. It's more complicated than that, but to make it simple: A guy dressed in a suit is more attractive for the average woman than a guy dressed in his underwear, whereas for a man a woman is more attractive in underwear than with a suit.

I mentioned this in another comment that I don't think you read, but I'll repeat it here.

I'm a lesbian. I do enjoy the bikinis. But it's also distracting. You know what I mean? I just wanna play a game, not get all hot and bothered. (Besides, that's what fanart is for.)

Also, an idea is to remove the double standard. I'm okay with the women being in ridiculous costumes if the men are in equally ridiculous costumes.

It all depends on the tone of the game.

If a game has a serious setting and takes itself seriously, then female characters should have serious outfits/costumes/whatever you want to call their clothing. For example, the most egregious exception to this rule that I can think of is Metal Gear Solid V, with the character Quiet. (The fact that she "breathes through her skin" is a poorly set up excuse with no background, and it's just stupid in general!) This is a stealth game where the rest of the characters are wearing tactical gear! WTF is up with the literal bikini?!

But, if a game doesn't take itself seriously, then I'm fine with ridiculous costumes, as long as the eye candy factor is equal. An example that I can think of (it might not be the best but oh well) is with Overwatch's skins. The skins in Overwatch aren't canon, so they aren't taken seriously. For example, Widowmaker has a bikini skin. Also, for example, McCree has an equally showy swimsuit skin. See? The eye candy here is equal for both genders. That's the equality that I like.

And fanart shouldn't be regulated at all. If fetish art is allowed to be on DA's front page, then no fanart can be censored.

The thing is that sexualty works different for men and women and what is attractive for one sex may be ridiculous for the other, but that doesn't mean is ridiculous overal. There's a common fallacy of putting men with female bikinis and saying "see, it looks ridiculous so it's not same treatmen and is sexist", but that's not how sexuality works. Men are more visually direct; a costume that shows cleavage or a bikini type costume is sexy for us, but a male costume that emphatizes a big penis, or a thong, is not really much sexy for a woman. She's, on average, more atracted to elegant clothing, or clothes that empathize the shoulders, the arms, stuff like that.

If you look at game designs realizing that the same design is not what it works for both sexes, and look at what both sexes find atractive, then you realize that both design actually empathize whats sexy. Male designs are usually elegant, or empathize shoulders, back, arms, etc. Also men in fighting games are also impossibly ripped. The amount of training needed to have those muscles is on body builder level, and in reality body builders aren't really good fighters cause to have the muscles so empathized they have to use steroids and desecate their bodies, making them weak. The male bodies in games are more unrealistic than a female can be.

Problem is the male unrealism seem to not matter, while the female unrealism seem to be a sin. You can look at stuff like what happens in the new Mortal Kombat, were women designs have been toned down to not be as sexy as old entries (in a game where people take their brains and guts out) while the male characters have increased in revealing clothes to a point that in average males wear less clothes than females. Even feminists like Liana K have commented how this is not fair cause it's a double standard; either reduce both or let them both be.

As for Quiet; i don't like MGS, but i've played a couple, and they're games with characters like a a vampire who looks like Joaquin cortes, a girl whose power is to literally been so lucky that bullets avoid her, some bdsm guy who reads minds, a pyromant and even the president of the US on nanomachine steroids. I wouldn't say something like Quiet is crazy for that saga XD

Your analysis is in depth and thought out. What are your sources for what you say about female and male sexuality?

I agree, male muscles can be pretty over-the-top and ridiculous. (I've always found them personally disgusting, but maybe that's just because I'm not attracted to men, lol). I think another reason why game devs over-emphasize muscles is because of a male power-fantasy thing, but I have no evidence of that.

But at least having big, beefy muscles makes sense in a scenario where people are fighting on another, while revealing clothing isn't. Mortal Kombat is a game where the brutality of combat is the main focus: well, in real combat, "sexy" items of clothing are pretty big weaknesses. Bikinis are easily ripped off; Holes near the cleavage area are super easy to grab; that sort of thing.

I can stand by Mortal Kombat's choice to make the male clothing equally revealing, but not if they're going to "fix up" the female clothing. The franchise needs to commit on how ridiculous it wants to be. If they make the male and female clothing equally ridiculous, then it's fair, and not "objectifying" females.

((Hmm, maybe I should have researched a bit more into Metal Gear. . .))

You can find a lot on male and female sexuality in evolutionary biology or evolutionary psychology. There's also sexology tho that one relies more on experience from the writer than studies or data.

David Buss has some good books on the issue, like The evolution of desire, or Why women have sex, written with Cindy Meston

You mean about the clothing in Mortal Kombat?

I think the moment any media makes clear they're not going for realism, any argument about realism should be thrown out the window. MK is a saga that's based on a sci fi world where people have magic powers, there's lizard people and a demon hell guardian with a skeleton for face. The designs are overal ridiculous in any way, and the gameplay involves ripping the brain out of somone but then the character keeps fighting after that.

Worrying about how much realistic would be to fight on swimsuits under those circumstances seems ridiculous at best.

You know why? Because (sometimes) of the tendency of creators to believe that their audience are straight! Heterosexual! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*ahem* And it's because of this that you get things like the Male Gaze because advertisers prefer shows targeted to young men. Why? Because they're more likely to be swayed by advertising.

Yes, fanart is to to get all hot and bothered; unless you're an SJW. In which case, you get comments like this: :iconsjwplz: :iconsaysplz: "TAKE THIS ART DOWN AT ONCE, YOU SEXIST PIECE OF CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" or "www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdOMLE… !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *just replace "castle" with "comment section"*" etc. etc.

What do you mean "equally ridiculous costumes"?
