I'd never really found the name "Hogwarts" to be at all odd until I read the Goblet of Fire. Here you had the Durmstrang school show up, full of strong, serious young men, then the Beauxbaton school, with it's lovely gifted ladies... both school names reflecting its students...
...then there's "Hogwarts"... like... hosting what, smelly fat kids with skin bumps? Geeze! Not an entirely flattering name! Which is how me and Shagster came about this lil' comic. I don't know if the Brittish system calls its elementary school system "elementary school" or something else, but I figure this way keeps it clear for most people anyway. Also, the bgs and uniform designs I stole shamelessly from google, so if they look familiar (or if you happened to wear one as a child) it's no strange coincidence.

This'll be my last SP for a while, next weekend I move to Toronto and will be getting up to speed on the new job the whole following week, and I'm most likely going to want to party HARD that following weekend, but they're still coming folks, so no worries about me ending this for good any time soon :D

We have Primary school, which is your 'elementary' school and then High school. We don't have a middle school, I always thought that odd about America, seems pointless to go for just a couple of years or so and then go to High school. pupils in 5th and 6th year of high school (in Scotland) are known as seniors but the younger years aren't called sophomores (can't spell it) or whatever other name you've got over in the US.

So muggleborns, or those with at least one muggle parents would have gone to primary while Purebloods were generally homeschooled. The reasoning seems to be that by the age of 11, all wizarding kids can start learning to use their magic and are old enough to be away from school but before the age of 11, it can greatly vary when a child starts demonstrating magic. So it would appear puberty has something to go with magical ability as 11 is the average age for that I believe.

Awesome comic, it is true that the other two names seem to really suit their students but I think JK chose Hogwarts (it's apparently a planet) for the quirkiness of the name.

but in the books they were both co ed schools.  and it always made no sense why all of france would limit itself to just girls. vice versa for durmstrang and where ever it is.

Well, I assume there's more than one school in most countries.
I say most because of differing cultures...

teach us something please
whether we be old and bald
or young with scabby knees
our heads could do with filling
with some interesting stuff
for know they're bare
and full of air, dead flies and bits of fluff
so teach us stuff worth knowing
bring back what we've forgot
just do your best we'll do the rest
and learn until our brains all rot!

there are sculptures of winged boars on either side of the gate...
I know where Harry goes to school...
