Le tre principali categorie di combattenti che era possibile trovare in un esercito medioevale di epoca carolingia.
Da sinistra a destra:
– Il cosiddetto "Cavaliere Leggero", dotato di spada, scudo elmetto e casacca rinforzata;
– Il "Cavaliere Pesante", con picca e armatura in cotta di maglia (le armature complete arrivarono solo molto più tardi, già quasi in epoca rinascimentale);
– Il "Fante", che costituiva la grande maggioranza degli eserciti dell'epoca ed altro non era se non un contadino o bracciante a cui era stato "caldamente consigliato" di prendere parte alla guerra gentilmente organizzata dal suo feudatario, e che si recava in battaglia con quello che di meglio aveva, ovvero gli strumenti del suo mestiere: martelli, falci, forconi o – come in questo caso – semplici bastoni.

These are the three main categories of army men you could find in a medieval army during the Carolingian period.
From left to right:
– The so called "light knight", armed with sword and shield and dressed with helmet and a reinforced jacket;
– The "Heavy Knight", with a pike and mail armor (your typical full armor came a couple of centuries later, about in renaissance time);
– The "Infantry Man", whom made up the most of that time armies and was just your typical farmer or peasant, who was warmly suggested to take part in that war his feudatory lovingly organized, and who went in battle with the best weapons he could find: his work tools, for example hammers, scythes, forks or – like the one you see here – a simple wooden stick.
