Kaladin - A Stormlight Kickstarter

Journal Entry: Mon Sep 18, 2017, 5:52 AM

So, I'm sure a lot of TSA readers and fans are already aware of a gorgeous Kickstarter going on from the Black Piper Orchestra! There's only about a week left and it needs a little more pushing. :D

If you haven't checked it out, you totally should. It's such a great project featuring extremely talented musicians. It's an idea for books I've never even thought of since the original Lord of the Rings arrangements.

I'd highly recommend taking a peek, or even supporting it if that suits your fancy!  If fully funded, my art will be featured in an art book accompanied by the soundtrack. They will also receive an updated treatment on existing art I have produced as well. Any support offered would be just really neat and provide a great opportunity for fellow Sanderson fans and inspiring performers.

www.kickstarter.com/projects/3…

Also, I maaaay have more updates soon? My other social media sites have undergone a small hiatus since well, I've been on a hiatus. Coming back around a little slowly... but surely.

Best best <3 ~

SO, I mentioned in my previous journal about a withdrawal of presence here over at dA. I'm NOT deleting the account or abandoning it altogether. I got a few notes so Im going to clarify. =( I just have to admit my updating here is sparse and won't improve anytime soon. I still very much like dA, but juggling so many accounts is hard at times.

There will continue to be book and other related works updated here. I want to mention book fan art in particular because of the massive support I've received here for the Cosmere stuff. I still receive emails about those older works and I have new ones one the way. I realize most of the audience comes here for those, and I'd never limit the access fans have to those works, ever.

You will see more of those from me, and also more professional work from me in that regard. deviantART allowed me the ability to work on such amazing projects and I want to make sure I give credit where its due.

Thanks again. Okay I think I'm done for now.

Guys, I won't be updating dA much from now on. I guess it might've been apparent over the last year or so. I'm reaching out to everyone still here that I've lapsed on contacting. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this has caused if you've been trying to reach me through here.

krharts@gmail.com is my email. Please reach me there.

Smaller, private commissions are now permanently closed through deviantART. This does not include if we already have arrangements made. Due to fluctuating schedule and maintaining on top of things in a proper way, I just won't be taking them through deviantART anymore. It makes communication difficult and alerts are spotty. Any licensing and marketable commission works can be arranged, however. Just not through dA after this journal.

(A commission request notified me that this journal updated weirdly for him, so I'm making a new one :> )

Hey guys, I have a bunch of new illustrations coming soon and a personal project that I'm working on almost full-time outside of work that I'm excited about. But, I'm going to take a break and I'm in between jobs. Since Ive started streaming I realized I'd like to upgrade some things to provide a better experience so maybe if I can get a commission or two I can do that. I've been pretty consistent and want to keep going!

Just note me if you're interested. I may ask permission to work on them during my twitch stream also.

Hey, follow me on Twitch. I'm doing things on there now. Going to try to do a couple a week. Im thinking I may do a morning study session on a regular basis. Maybe Friday mornings for a few hours?

Next stream is tomorrow, November 9th at 4pm est.

Volga Story
In my gallery there are a bunch of old old oooooold pics with "OCS" on them. These are dated, but part of my personal project I'm currently fleshing out and updating pretty much with all of my remaining time outside of work. It'll be world building with concept art, drawings, writing, and full illustrations. So expect to see a lot of posts about this soon. These are also what I'll be streaming.

Update:
So, its been a while since my last update and post on DeviantArt. I still really like this place, but I'm sick of my old portfolio and want to get back into the swing of things before I update here. Due to work and health eating up most of the time outside, things have gotten stale and I haven't commented on all of the pretty works I stalk here. So follow me on other media for the sketches and stuff you may miss:

Important, deadline is removed (from the 15th of this month) to receive the Juniper and expanded Raven images. Sign up before May 1st and you'll receive both packages! Those already signed up will not be charged twice!

For those interested, I'm still getting used to things before the first release. Gumroad will be staggered a month after releases so you have a little wait. Im getting there! All of the first release is ready to go. And I hope to resume normal posting now that Im kind of getting used to things.

I had some bumps this week on getting started. Im going to get back into doing what I like to do and focus the tutorials around that subject matter instead of the other way around. Its a learning process but I have some good feedback from some very awesome people.

More to come.
And I still have so much to do on the initial set-up part but so much is done. I'm currently working on the mentorship packages while I create the next set of lessons. If you're interested in checking out the initial posts find them on my Patreon here!  Ill refine this journal and personal site with more information soon!  I'm going to take 2 days away from it all and jump back in on Monday!

www.patreon.com/krhart?ty=c
After so long of a delay, I will begin releasing tutorial campaigns that I've been working on for a while. This'll be through gumroad and patreon. Plus youtube and vimeo for the free stuff once I get it together.  I've grown exhausted with the majority of my energy being poured into IPs that are not my own even though I truly enjoy working on some of them. I am hopeful that I can provide what I believe is very good quality and extremely thorough content for people who are interested in learning and gathering resources I have put together.  I don't mean to be vague, but I will share more. I just wanted you guys to have a heads up.

Regardless of the reception, I am having so much fun with the struggle and process of it all and if one person can find it useful, then I will be thrilled. Recording and editing and creating supplemental packages for the tutorials has helped me grow a lot over the last few weeks and I'd like to keep improving. My biggest fears are falling into that trap of rushing and I've seen before with other campaigns. I do not wish to do that. If I could make this my priority I'm certain I can even improve from where I feel I am now.

Its been delayed so much but not anymore. There is so much I want to cover. I wish I could clone myself and do 5 at once. But I mustn't rush even with that persistent anxiety to get it out there. Stay tuned!

Also, for people who are wondering about mentoring, please give me a little more time. Its a lot to cover and I want to make sure I can cover everyone with time and energy while I get stuff out. I just recently got the time to really focus on it and its crazy!

Okay so the holidays has everyone crunched against a wall. Me included! But I still have tutorials with a mentoring option coming early next year. I'm not forgetting about anyone I promise but lemme get through the holiday first.

Also, I am migrating my art email into a business account so that I can keep some things separate. I want to do all of the things next year and well, don't want a mix-up. If you've tried to send a professional inquiry to krharts@gmail.com, you may get a forward from mail@krhart.com.

For the past 2 years I've been under freelance that I still cannot show.  Recently I have some new work that will be revealed sooner that I'm quite excited about. I can't wait to show them as well as a new venture I'm leaping into with my own work.

See you in 2016. Happy New Year!

So, I'm considering opening up the possibility of providing a very specialized form of mentoring next year. This would have limited slots (maybe 4 people) but extremely focused for specific software.  This will possibly cover most current versions of Painter, but will include Paint tool SAI and Studio Paint options since their brush categories and handling are similar but limited. Its a bit limited finding resources for Painter programs and I want to help a bit.

You can absolutely find good painter artists and tutorials online, but they aren't exactly focused and catered to your own needs. I am hoping to provide a way for people to have access to this. If no interest is shown, I will release them via gumroad or patreon maybe but they will not have personalization as an option.

The mentoring period will be possibly over 3 months with a one-time affordable rate and then a month to month option for continuing education. This will include skype and google options for conferencing twice a week, personalized feedback and redlines (paintovers), and a private forum through my domain for your submissions and correspondence with others and myself. I will have this information if and when this goes forward. I will not initiate this until the completed coursework is ready to go on my end.

Example, but not limited to:

Technical:
- Intro
- Program settings and performance
- Troubleshooting some known Painter issues and hurdles
- UI options and customization for heavy, minimal, and specific job workflows
- Custom brush sets catered for your own style
- Creating papers and brush styles yourself
- Sending you my own personalized settings and files

Artistic:
For traditional artists:
- I can help you customize painter defaults to mimic your personal style in a completely digital format

-Enhancing your traditional works with seamless accuracy. Example, my traditional pencils are corrected using Painters brush sets from time to time without appearing digitally altered. These brushes were created from my own drawings.

For digital artists
- I will break down most brush categories for you, showing you just a few possibilities you have for approaching digital painting

- How to enhance your favorite brush categories and create combinations of brush work.

- Broad style approaches. Cel, soft-cell, realism, ink, oil, watercolor, and pencil based style approaches. I've used painter with anime fan styles to my current one for over 10 years.

- Focused texture workflow and brushes. Examples: Fur and clothing materials. Landscapes, seascapes, cloudscapes. I have entire UI presets for these very specific things. Its VERY focused.

-I will show you work in realtime with recorded video for mini tutorials that may not be a focus in the lectures for you to view on your own time.

- Other in depth coverage over painter's tools.

This will focus mostly a technical side of producing digital art in painting programs. Art fundamentals, and lessons focusing on light, color, anatomy and composition will be present during the lessons naturally, but they will not be the main focus.  I will provide you lists to respectable resources to supplement your learning as well as doing the best I can to cover these topics in a way that won't stunt your learning.

I prefer to give you the best at what I can provide. If I'm not good at architecture, you won't be getting architecture tutorials. Make sense?

Anyway, we'll see how it goes and whether Ill do it this way or another. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Activision Beachhead is in search of an animator and UI artist. Drop your name and portfolio here if you are interested. Bonus stage: if you're in the bay area or visiting GDC next  week you could get a casual lunch interview as a pre-screen. No worries if not!

Anyway... in other news.

Things are going so much better. I should have some new stuff rolling in in a couple of days as I get settled!

Um welcome!

I've received an influx of new watchers recently so um, thanks!  That, and it would be very nice to start some more positive momentum for this page again. Because of a move soon and lack of available hardware on my end I probably won't have any solid or refined digital art for at least another month. I've been very focused on pencil work and studying again anyhow but I do plan on releasing some finished stuff eventually.
Content: Length and some language...

I don't really post new journals much anymore but I feel like its time for one.  Its been about 4 years since I made my last career transition. I guess you could say 3 years since 2014 I was mostly in flux and don't remember most of it.  I discovered a lot of things about art and the way I work during 2014. And a lot of it is bad. I wasn't really all there. Something in me in just gave out. Of course there were lots of things stressing me in my life personal and professional that helped push me there, the same thing that pretty much all of us deal with. But something was on top of it that wasn't allowing me to cope and it spilled over into my professional life. Badly. It showed to my employers and to myself.  I was ready to just give it up and go...somewhere. I didn't deserve success and I still fight with allowing myself to be successful. I was in petty bad shape. I posted about some of it on a pic and got some comforting responses, but I couldn't reply.  I felt ashamed because I was fucked and was always able to handle it myself until then.

I severed ties with a lot of people. Some undeservingly so. I was afraid I was going to lash out or people I respect and care about would see what was going on and that thought was cringeworthy to me. But it was pretty apparent all along for those that mattered. I became obsessive with things (and people) that didn't matter and allowed important shit to fade into the background.

I spent several years turning into this person that resorted to paper. Problems were rationalized in journals. I over analyzed myself into this person who calculated every thought and move I made and it affected my art. Art triggers bothered me because I couldn't perform, so I read shit from dead Romans, math and music theory because it was safe. I wrote more than I sketched last year. I never share writing anymore like I used to, I feel too vulnerable. But for what? I give too many fucks. I've disconnected from people over so long while keeping up the necessary image enough that people around me wouldn't pry. Everything became neutral. No high or low. Just...there. Most of the work I was producing under stress. Half of it while intoxicated ...and not for good reasons.

Things got a little better recently. Money helps maybe. A steady job while I untie some knots. Yeah that helps. But something else just clicked lately and I'm not sure what. I just know I bought a laptop and went home for a while. Just forgot about everything and reset a bit. Realized I hadn't seen family or just enjoyed friends in several years.

I decided to become full-time freelancer for the foreseeable future while working on personal projects again. I'm selling all of my crap that I have left and just being a free agent in home and work. I may get a workspace to use between traveling. Im a few months in and I think it was the right decision. It is harder professionally for someone who struggles socially, but I need the discipline I used to have and somehow it makes my personal work more rewarding. I think I can grow from it and it'll force me to put myself out there more. I'm hoping...

As far as art goes. I have several things I'd like to do, but I won't waste time talking about it. I just hope to be productive and enjoy producing for myself again. Its been a while but I kind of feel it coming back lately. If I can feel happy and proud of that then I know I can return there professionally again.
