This is a really nice drawing. I like the way you Cadence was drawn. She looks young, happy, and free minded and the beach that she's on reflects that. I do kind of wish the shadow of her on the rock was slightly more visible and the ball had a bit of a brighter shine from the reflecting sunlight, but other than that, it's brilliant. The water looks a little off, some of the waves look disconnected from the actual ocean or just little out of place and it could be a bit of a lighter, shinier blue considering the sky is clear and the water should be shimmering, but that's my opinion. I would've liked to see some small wave breakage on the rocks and glistening spray from the breaking waves around her to add to the bright mood, but that's an optional effects touch. 10/10! its nice cool and awesome

Thank you for the critique :)

This picture was drawn and painted digitally in Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI.

I think that it's really cute! I think that there should be some hoof prints in the sand. Also isn't there any other pony there with her??? I like the water! Its nice and blue and has little waves! I liked the shading on Cadence. It would be a bit better even if you added things like a towel underneath a umbrella because you usually see things like that at the beach. I think you could also add some little fillies in the water and Shining could possibly be the lifeguard! Just some little ideas. I think that its super cute and I really like it!

The colour choice is nice, but the beach ball clashes with Cadence's colour scheme, so maybe a different colour might be better.

The sand looks odd without hoof prints of any kind that show that someone had been there, but the rock is a nice touch to show that Cadence is the main focus.

Cadence herself looks pretty good, but her hair tie is rather stiff and so is her ponytail. I like her tail though, it has a nice curl that makes me think of a rose. Her ears are a bit too pointy for my taste, but overall she's quite cute!

The shading is really good. I need a few tips on how to shade everything, because I have no ability to shade.

Thank you very much for your critique :D

For the shading I use a layer set on “multiply” above the flat colors.

On that layer I paint the dark areas with one or two (tinted) grays. Usually with rather rough brush-strokes.

There are just two brushes the I use: The first one has a hard edge - I use this one the most (you can easily see its use on all of the portrait pictures).
The other one has very soft edges - this one is used to create large and very subtle shading areas that are hard to notice but add a nice volume effect to the shapes (you can see it here on Gilda’s neck: [link] )

I think the sand is covered by water. This would explain why there aren't any hoof prints. But she could also have been standing there for a long time, or the flew on the rock.

The sand isn't fully covered by water, but that's a good point.

Usually I don't like the way the shades in the clouds, the water and the rocks are done. But here I'm seeing figures in the clouds, which I never do in real clouds, and I'm not sure if this is intentional or not. So that's a plus.

Her look is the most interesting thing about the picture. There can be a lot of things she is looking at. Maybe someone she is playing with (the ball could be from someone else entirely, but taking its colors into account, she probably brought it). That's the question that immediately came to my mind when I saw it the first time. And there is plenty of room to make things up.

I like the overall mood of course. Especially at a time where I can't hope for weather like this around here for another two months. Soft but positive entirely. It's fitting her character.

I must second that the shadows aren't perfect, after it was pointed out. But I wouldn't have noticed it on my own and it's not too bad.

The only thing I don't like about it are she white/light circles and lines in the water. For me they are evidence that it is a drawing, not a photo. With so much detail in Cadance, it withdraws a bit of the magic.

I think Cadance's shadow is more accurate now. But I'm not sure about the ball's. It looks like the shadow is the one of a smaller ball.

I have now changed the shading to make it less vague.

going to be a bit nitpicky here, but I love the colour choice & how is bright & gives off a happy aura. one thing that bugs me, however, is that while everything else has selective outlining, cadence has black outlines on every part of her body, making her look like she was inserted into a separate picture rather than actually being a part of the image - the legs & the rock don't help either, as the rock should be flatter/her legs more steeply raised. given how smooth everything else is, it is a tad odd that the hair should bend at angles rather than being smooth. the shading on the fur & feathers should gradient to a more dark reddish hue rather than desaturated purple, but that is more opinion than a criticism. the eyes also seem a tad dull, being shaded darker & desaturated instead of darker & more colourful. altogether, wonderful piece, nicely & professionally done.

Yes, the outlines were too dark - it was not as obvious in the old version.
They are now brighter and should blend better now. I have also flattened the back side of the rock.

Cadance looks really great here. I like how prettily you depicted her eyes. She has a rather nicely styled mane and tail here, and her wings look terrific too. The background looks marvelous with the sandy beach, quiet ocean waves, and lovely blue sky. This is a really excellent artwork! Nicely done. :)
