Capturing ships by Kooskia Capturing ships by Kooskia
(c) Naomi Novik (original world)
(c) Kooskia (characters and fancomic)

That's my second fancomic/parody about the Temeraire 's fanfiction "Vindex" i'm writing ^^ Set in Temeraire world but during 1860 "Expedition of Thousend", a volunteer military expedition to unify South Italy with North.
Here it's based on the last chapter 7 of the fanfiction (i've still to upload it on this site (sorry, it's only in ITALIAN) [link]

I've already done a previous fancomic here [link]

In this chapter we can see the same Giuseppe Garibaldi (hero and leader of the expedition) a bit disappointed because dragons started capture warship to have money (with a start of political ideas to rally founds for a pro-dragons political campaign ^^ even if that wasn't the moment and the time to start it)
The other guy is a British naval commander that plan to "recover" the ship as private British citizen, claiming the ownership of the ship as "wreck" and then re-selling it at the same Borbonic Navy (previous owner) and then giving the 50% of the money to the dragons:...

However the little Puck got caught by the enthusiasm and captured a fishing boat rather then a warship v.v

PLEASE, IF YOU FAVE IT, COMMENT IT !! X3

I have read your fan fiction story. It is pretty good and the best Temeraire story of the Italian fan fiction site. I see you have studied the history of Italy, though I wish that Naomi Novik not studied the history of the Napoleonic wars well and you have copied an idea of dragons' ill-treatment in Russia (I'm Ukrainian LOL! :) ) I like your first chapter of Vindex story. You have started your narrative with description of the battle between the Prussians from one side and Italians (with their French allies) from other. It’s sad that Vindex has lost his captain. I like how you described dragons' feeding and these poor courier dragons who don’t have enough food. The naval battle is pretty good written. I don’t remember accurate about the “Chinese Law” at Naomi’s book, it seems related to the banking system and dragons’ opinion to it, but not theft in general. I feel sorry for the young men who lost their lives helping Vindex and Garibaldi’s people, but I’m glad that Vindex found his new captain (Pietro?).

Oh thank you !! I'm so glad you read it x3 And that you liked it!
It really means much for me x3
Yeah yeah i remember XD You've read that Vindex got involved in the Crimea's war?
That element of the treatment of that russian dragon will surface again at the end of the fanfiction.
And yep ^^ every time i write a chapter i go check for some historical details of facts, persons, etc..
And i liked to fill the gap and take time with descriptions and feeling of dragons.. you can see that the fanfic it's mainly from dragon point of view XD

Yeah.. i wanted to add some realism tragedy (battles of that time often involved large amount of causalities).
About the Chinese Law if i'm right it's that:
Basically dragons has same rights and duties of humans.
(high class dragons as Celestial of course share the same rights of the imperial family of human emperors).
But i remember that by law the dragons are allowed to personally perform the death penalty if an human try to steal from his bank account; and that's the basic difference between the laws for humans.

"You've read that Vindex got involved in the Crimea's war?"
Yes it was in the beginning and then as a flashback. Unfortunately NN does not write about Russian air forces. Turkey has their Kaziliks and they are powerful weapon, I hope Naomi will come up with Russian dragons in the next book, though...

Large land means large number of dragons (basically) and a potential number of wild dragons. Actually i THINK that Russia could be the second one as nationt with number of dragons (wild and on service) after China.
This leads an interesting thing:
If the dissatisfaction of dragons under the czarist rule will keep on (with a conservative way to look at dragons as beasts that can be beaten) is luckily that we could see aviators joining the Revolution hoping for a better future for their dragons rather then during the Czars.
Reguardless if this happens or not, when Hitler will attack Urss, he's going to face a country with a large number of dragons..
Potentially we could have:
1) Hitler delaying the invasion or maybe abandoning the plans
2) A better resistance of the Soviet forces during the first operations and possibly a shorter end for the war on the Eastern Front, and an earlier downfall of Hitler.

(i so LOVE making this alternate reality hypotesis! XD You know that i was planning to make a Vietnam War dragon fanart? X3)

Interesting question, personally I think that a military technologies can have a huge impact on the conflict. A weapons of the Second World War are pretty powerful to destroy the dragons in huge amounts. By the way the fate of the Russian horses at WW II is pretty sad, they dieing by machine-gun fire and cannon shots and after WW II their breeding were reduced to favor of tractors and trucks.

That's true, others have already think about this. But dragons could still have 2 great use:
1)they can be an huge key point in logistics. Being in flesh and bones, and having intelligence and flying ability, they can have a great value in transport of supplies and troops far from the frontline. And logistic is a key element of warfare. Or landing and insertions of forces/troops behind enemy lines.
2)as fighting dragons could be reasonable to think that the different countries could work on increase number of fire-breathing and making them smaller. This could still give them a valuabe and important use on battlefield.
(i was actually focusing on this thing for Vientam War. Sort of parallelism with what happened after the Korean War. US dismissed the old style angled wings Soviet fighters with guns as obsolete... and MiG-17 proved to be excellent fighters against missile-armed aircrafts. At the same time the the US could have chosen how vulnerable could have been using dragons in battlefield and the use is limited on logistics... but Vietcong could do a great use of dragons to give further mobility among jungle (expecially using local breeds used to live in the Vietnamese forests)carrying groups of Vietcong forces for the assaults on the American FSB.
Expecially fire-breathing dragons could be amazing to hit such anti-guerrilla bases and it's even best the option to use them as anti-helicopter weapons (attacking, covered by ground, the Huey helicopter).
US could attempt to imitate Vietcong tactics or using fire-breathing for massive jungle destructions, but in the end i think that the general situation gives more points to Viets.

I have read it Throne of Jade, though understood it differently. Maybe it's my wrong translation, I was sure that this law is about dragons who cheating with their wooden tablets.

I'm pretty much sure that's because dragons can't of course use normal coin and count it, so they use this system with tablets that's actually as a sort of "credit card". Just that in this way the've trust that the human banks doesn't steal money from them. For this point, the law scare the human thieves that would steal money in this way by dragons with this "death sentence by dragon".
Also it say that the number of thieves it's actually very low not only because human thieves are very scared by this penalty, but also because dragons check often all the expenses they do and if missing something.

I agree, though a dragons are greedy for shining items and have some propensity to theft (Temeraire is often steal sheep and cows but Laurence pay for it with his own gold of course).

Yeah but i think that the dragon greed is a bit unique.
I mean.. they stolen the cows but, they were more perceived as "property" of the same dragons, and stealing them wasn't a bad thing in Temeraire opinion, if i'm right.
And it's also interesting that we've not still seen dragons stealing treasures each others... i could add this theme on the fanfiction.

Theft of property from one another is mentioned in one of Arcady's "songs", if I remember correct.
