You lived in darkness, never knowing

Colour or Light.

But even on a spring day,

You could smell the fresh grass

And taste those sweet dandelions.

Those eyes as red as rubies

Could not see

But you knew my voice

You knew my embrace

And you knew my scent.

You were not afraid to show

That side of you

That made me laugh.

You sometimes bit back

But you were an underdog

And yet you took everything

In your stride.

I knew your snow white fur

And ruby eyes

Belied a sad fate

Your life would be shortened, I knew,

And yet on that day

It still came far too soon.

And it still feels unfair

Because I wanted so badly for each of us to have more time.

Now the duo is sadly just one.

That cruel time came

And now all I can do is

Yearn and mourn

For all of the days you'll never spend

On that grassy garden under the apple tree.
