I keep getting confused on the scatter smudge brush part. I look at the tutorial you link and do it but when i use that smudge it doesent work the way it should do.

Could you explain a bit further what it is exactly that confuses you? Could you maybe include an image of the result you're getting now? The tutorial is kinda dated so perhaps it doesn't work the same way in a newer version of Photoshop so I could check that out for you :)

I'm stuck on step "apply image" thing. What does that mean?

It means you use the apply image function in photoshop. Make a new layer > Image > Apply image.

First of all, this is a great technique, and I am SO thankful for finding this tutorial!!! With that being said, i got an awesome result, but your tutorial is severely lacking in directions. I have a lot of photoshop experience, and it was very hard to follow you at times. I didn't quite know what you meant by the scatter brush for a bit, then I realized you weren't talking about a specific brush, but rather the preference for the brush. If I were you, I would highlight that step, because I thought maybe you downloaded a specific brush (since I don't use the scatter technique a lot...but will for sure now!!) Thank you again!

I see how that might be confusing. I made the tutorial with the members of forums I frequent in mind, where "scatter brushing" is a commonly known concept.

I'm gonna try and find a tutorial I made long ago in which I put my exact settings. If I find it I'll add it to the tutorial to make it a bit more clear what you're supposed to do.

Thanks for the feedback! :)

the background is awesome but the tutorial lacks in details. i mean it's not for beginners like me cuz i couldnt figure out how to use the round brush in order to make it look like yours (the step after the clouds)

Yeah I made it assuming some knowledge of what I'm doing there. You do the round brush thing by using your smudge tool and then ticking the "scatter" option in the brush settings. If I'm not mistaken I also explain how to do that in my beginner tutorial :)

Great tutorial! instead of just the black white gradient, i made it a custom gradient with black and white and randomized it, turned into a really cool light effect also...

With adjustments like gradient map, do you make a new layer of it or use it right on the image?

You use an adjustment layer. How to do an adjustment layer is explained in the Billy Talent turorial ;)

what the heck is scatter smudging? I tried doing this for work, and using a regular smudge bursh came out too dark.
anyway you could respond ASAP?

Scatter smudging is using the smudge tool with the scatter option turned on. To turn the scatter option on you need to go to "brush settings" and tick the box that says "scatter". You can then play around a bit with how wide you want the scatter to be etc. I do believe you need to have at least photoshop CS2 to use the option "brush settings".

I hope that helped and good luck! :)

What do you mean by "used an apply image and then just started scatter smudging" ? I'm sorry, im still a complete noob at this so could you help me out?

You can make an apply image by going to image > apply image
Scatter smudging is using the smudge tool with the scatter option turned on.

You might wanna try this tutorial first btw [link] :)

Correct me if i'm wrong: if you create a blank layer and then apply an image to it, basically you are duplicating the only other layer in the image (the one with the clouds).
This confuses me a little bit: is there a reason why you didn't just say to duplicate the layer as you do in the following step?

I made this tutorial a really long time ago, so yeah, some things might not make a lot of sense. If you know how to do things better, or in a way that makes more sense, don't hesitate to just do so :p
