Into summer now, working on a few things including practicing with my new Intuous Pro Medium.  Just ordered a custom keyboard/mouse mat with a design I whipped up today.
Desktop-mat-design-1 by knottyprof
The image came from pexels.com but did a bit with coloring and shading by adding a gradient overlay and another image from Pexels.com.  Used an older mandala pattern for the main image and the board and center shield was from a pattern brush I created today.  Need to condense all of my brushes into a single file for easy access.

Took advantage of the half off sale and signed up for the next six months for $15.  For $2.50 a month I can live with that.

Well, Core ran out and I am not paying $60 a year for a few bells and whistles.  It would have to sing and dance for that price, and it really does neither.  But it is fall and still working on a few different projects and still plan on posting stuff on here occasionally.

Sum, sum, summer time...

The Knotty-Works

Haven't added an entry in over half a year, where does the time go?  Well, Summertime has finally settled here in Michigan.  Busy with product for The Knotty-Works, both artwork, layout, and content.  The life of a self-publisher is not an easy one, especially with a day job to boot.  Most of the artistic work of late is page background design and page elements.  I love making radial patterns in Illustrator then fleshing them out in Photoshop.

So much to learn about Photoshop and Illustrator, just when I think I have mastered everything I need to know for what I use them for, I learn something new.

Textures and Public Domain Images

Discovered The NYPL public domain image collection:D (Big Grin) :D (Big Grin)
Also learned of textures.com a week ago as part of a youtube tutorial I was watching.  You can download up to 7 texture images a day with just a free account and use as desired.  Awesome stuff to use for Photoshop projects as textures, patterns, etc.  Example of a project I used some of the textures in.

Christmas is a coming...

The Knotty-Works

Well, working trying to wrap up some projects for the end of the year including a couple more issues of the Player Paraphernalia series for the Pathfinder game.  Also working on some ideas for page backgrounds, working with metallic appearances at the moment along with patterns.  Using Illustrator to come up with the designs then using Photoshop to create the background along with the use of blending options to give it more dimensionality.

Also want to come up with more winter themed (not Christmas but winter like frost, ice, and snow) based backgrounds.  Have two already but need to come up with more.

Also up for commissions for page backgrounds and elements for anyone interested.

From Deviant Art email regarding ticket I created last week

Hello,

Thank you for contacting DeviantArt Customer Care.

The situation you are reporting is now a known issue and has been referred to the Devious Technology Department to be resolved.

As you may expect, at any given time there are a number of known issues related to bugs on the site. When new features or programs are released, these issues may be more noticeable. We are currently working to resolve this Core Membership extension issue.

We do our best to resolve all issues in the order of their importance based in part on the number of people affected by the issue and the complexity of fixing the problem. So we ask for your kind patience in waiting for a resolution. You may also wish to read this FAQ: help.deviantart.com/722/

Your ticket will now be set to "Solved" only because there is no longer any reason to keep the ticket open since the issue has been passed on to the Devious Technology Department as an active case.

We value your membership in DeviantArt and thank you so much for helping us track down bugs!

Kind Regards,
Charles

How do you expect to keep people willing to pay the new prices around if your system won't even allow them to extend their account? I had to wait until my core membership expired before I could "renew" my membership.  Not real happy with the new pay rates and if I wasn't so incorporated with this site I would probably just switch over to Adobe's behance account instead.  I only did the 3 month extension for now, will re-evaluate then.

Been a while since my last post so I thought I would create a new one.  Purchased the yearly subscription for Autodesk Sketchbook Pro a couple weeks ago (like 10% of what the Adobe CC subscription costs) and like to use it a lot more for my line drawing than photoshop (the zoom and rotate options are much more responsive than photoshop with the Surface Pro).  So between learning new drawing techniques and the software it is a slow process.
Used it to create DM-and-Penfold by knottyprof and several backgrounds yesterday including Pink ElephantZebra by knottyprof Blue001 by knottyprof Green001 by knottyprof

Page Backgrounds For Sale

Mon Apr 6, 2015, 7:30 PM

The Knotty-Works

Started setting up some of the page backgrounds for sale through Deviant Art.  Most will still be available through my DriveThruRPG store front, but individual sheets will also be available through Deviant Art for 50 or more points each.  Each one is set up at 3000 ppi and includes both a jpg and tiff file.
Examples include:
NGInterface L-1 by knottyprof NGInterface R-1 by knottyprof NGInterface O-1 by knottyprof

NGInterface L-2 by knottyprof NGInterface R-2 by knottyprof NGInterface O-2 by knottyprof

NGInterface L-3 by knottyprof NGInterface R-3 by knottyprof NGInterface O-3 by knottyprof

Each one is contracted to allow both personal and commercial use once purchased.
Setting these up through Deviant Art is not difficult, just time consuming so it may take a while to set them all up.  May branch out to other images as well, I have a lot for sale through bundled products at the DriveThru site anyway.

Happy April First Day

Wed Apr 1, 2015, 9:05 AM

The Knotty-Works

Not pulling any pranks, not fooling anyone (other than myself anyway) for the day.
Spring is here today and tomorrow then winter is back over the weekend, mother nature's pranking us all week long.  Snowed yesterday and Easter weekend is going to be cold.  Ready for it to be spring full time.

What is in the works?  Artistically, not much at the moment, but working on updating my last Player Paraphernalia issue and coming up with the next one due Monday morning but a few ideas for upcoming issues.  Goal is to publish one a week for at least 25 issues and so far have kept it up.  Six weeks to go which will take me through April into May.

Big fan of the Celtic god Taranis so created one rendition of his wheel last weekend and started another, just need to finish it.

Well if you are into superstitious trends and are triskaidekaphobic then this is going to be a rough year for you.  February, March, and November all have a Friday the 13th this year which I guess is a bit rare.  I am Irish in heritage so my luck tends to run that way so I think today may actually be lucky for me (should run out and pick up a Power Ball ticket today!).

I am planning on running a St Patrick's day sale for my gaming products starting this weekend (need to set it up yet, probably start tomorrow morning).
Created a shamrock icon to use as part of a graphic for the sale.

Got married on St Patrick's day and we are seeing Rhythm of the Night tomorrow night at the Whiting in Flint.

March Madness

Not big into basketball but it is that time of year.  Trying to wrap up commission work which has been fun and interesting, but time consuming.  But taking someone else idea and trying to give it a graphic representation is challenging and exciting.

My weekly contributions to my Player Paraphernalia line of Pathfinder supplements have been going strong, just finished a 4 1/2 issue series on the Witch Hunter inspired by the Seventh Son movie.  My personal goal it to get out 25 issues in 25 weeks and I am 3/5s of the way there but I am running out of steam so may begin slowing down a bit.

Hopefully getting a Surface Pro 3 or equivalent today which I have been desiring for a while now so I can actually have a digital drawing pad with Photoshop and Illustrator.  Personally would prefer the Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 but that is way out of my price range.  Still planning on dropping over a grand to get the machine I want plus accessories.  I am hoping that it gives my creative hand a boost as far as illustration.  I mainly use a mouse now for all of my graphic work, and though I am okay with it, I think a drawing tablet would increase productivity and something I can just carry around and doodle would be awesome.

Irish by nature and heritage so St. Patrick's Day is a big deal to me, also got married on that day so easy enough to remember the anniversary.  Thinking of having a sale on Drive Thru for many of my items in celebration, just don't want to conflict with the GM's day sale which I think ends on the 13th since I have a few items listed for that as well.

Figured it was time to update the ole journal.  Been working on several Pathfinder products and lately I have been working on weapon concepts in Illustrator including creating some stuff for other publishers.

Digging into advanced features of Illustrator including multiple fills and strokes in paths with the appearance panel including applying additional effects per fill and stroke.  Also adding masks to a lot of things so i can create my own custom shaped gradients (non linear and non radial) without using the gradient mesh tool.  I have tried to use the gradient mesh tool but it just seems too complicated and too time consuming to get it just the way I want it to look so I am playing around with other ways of doing it that are easier for me.
Just finished my rendition of a Ray Gun
RayGun-1 by knottyprof

I think it turned out rather well and even inspired me to create my first youtube tutorial.  Basically just blocked out the individual sections after blocking out the entire shape then went into the individual sections and added fills and applied gaussian blurs to them, masked the section to clip out the blur that flowed over the original section then applied a gaussian blur over the whole section (grouped).  I added the flash at the end because I wanted it to look like it was just about to fire.  I like the effect but am not sure about the colors, may play around with that a bit later.

Hard to believe Thanksgiving is only a few weeks off and Christmas is not far behind.  Of course, we did get Snow for Halloween which was heck of a wake up call that winter is on its way (not looking forward to that).
