A little boring info on my DA's origins (for those who haven't gone to my web site)!
After a motorcycle accident (in the fall of 2000), during a 5 month rehab, I started seeing animals heads in my son's wooden fence. Two years later I retired for two years to try and somewhat master what I wanted to do. Originally I was making relief carvings in lumber from the lumber yard to sell at flea markets and arts and crafts shows. Then I ran across a small saw mill that sold its first cut lumber (with the bark still on) as fire wood! Now I had more depth to work with. It was turning into a passion instead of just a hobby! And I had to turn to art gallerys as the new venue.
In my carvings/sculpture I'm using the knots, grain and sometimes the color of the wood to create what I've seen in the wood. Then I read a few books on what I was doing, and they all said not to do what I was doing!!
My current works are not of a commercial nature. No repeats, all very different, can't get real good at any one subject! I try not to use realism, though I hint at it by doing very detailed work on the parts I want to highlight, while trying to let the wood tell most of the story.
The real enjoyment of what I do is seeing someone look at my work and get a big smile on their face when the realize what they are looking at. Then to hear how they start to see things in wood. Maybe their own spirits are talking to them!
