I Saw a Perfect Ring

Deviation Actions

Literature Text

I saw a perfect ring glowing like pearl
around the moon last night,
and thought of storms to come,
and snow falling in the wind,
but instead, this morning dawned with icy fog.

Ah Winter,
when did you send  Autumn packing?
I walk outside to peek at your icy veil
and in return, feel your cold kiss
softly against my exposed cheek,
like some grand-aunt greeting a half-forgotten niece.

There is ice on my back porch,
and I watch geese flying in long, noisy vees.
And even my snapdragons, last to laugh at the season's change,
are beginning to believe that you have come to stay.
How did you surprise me this time?
It was one of the most perfect and bright lunar halos I have seen in a long time. Lunar halos always make me think of the "Wreck of the Hesperus:"

Then up and spake an old Sailor,
Had sailed the Spanish Main,
"I pray thee, put into yonder port,
for I fear a hurricane.

"Last night the moon had a golden ring,
And to-night no moon we see!"
The skipper, he blew whiff from his pipe,
And a scornful laugh laughed he.

An enjoyable read, Sue! I found the comparison between a cold kiss and a greeting from some grand-aunt to be the most striking — maybe because I was in the exact same situation a few weeks back, but with awkward smiles instead of cold kisses. I also loved the image and sound in "geese flying in long, noisy vees".

I like the images in this.
There have been some great moons this month. We have had some huge orange ones lately early in the evening.
