As I Remember

(Thoughts on World Aids Day, 2009)

Today, I will light
a candle against the night,
and remember those
who died and left behind them
dark only their light could fill.

Each one of those gone
had a face and a story,
a voice in the light.
In silence, I remember --
candle flame no substitute.

O let there be light, my friend,
this flame, hope for tomorrow.
In form, almost a choka (a japanese long poem form) but not quite, made up of two tanka, and a final pair of 7 syllable lines.
