About the photo & how I took it -- This image was shot along Kebler Pass outside of Crested Butte, Colorado, home to the world's largest organism; its Aspen forest. In fact, its so large that it has the ability to create its own weather. I spend a lot of my time here during autumn. It is simply an amazing place and this year I spent a little over a week down here photographing it as much as I physically could.
In this scene, the sun was just beginning to rise turning some of the clouds a brilliant shade of orange while other clouds remained dark due to an incoming snow storm. The Aspen trees were just glowing in the very subtle light illuminating below me. For this image I used a Fotodiox 2 stop Grad ND to hold back the highlights in the sky and a CPL to bring out the color of the leaves along with the blues in the image. I decided on an exposure of just over 1 second as I was worried anything longer could show movement in the trees which I wanted to avoid.
I hope you enjoy it!

Just did nearly a month in the hospital with sepsis, fun times. I am weak and can barely stand. 2018 has been a hell of a year for me. I did manage to sneak in a fall trip to the West Elk Mountains in southern Colorado though. Didn't think I was going to be able to pull it off with how sick I have been this year but I did. Took a massive hit financially from it, hoping to sell some prints to recuperate some. It hasn't been a fun year for me but I keep my hopes up. I haven't been out with my camera hardly at all this year due to it all so coming to sites like DA is difficult because I get inspired but am often unable to act on it. I do have a backlog of a lot of images I need to edit, so that has been taking my time when I am physically able to do so. I just need to get better, there's so much I want to see and explore with my camera and I want to be able to hold workshops and such.

Onwards and hi DA.

Oh the beard has grown, a lot.

A critique, eh? It's very rare I write these but what the heck. Don't kill me though lol

The first thing-- image size. It's too small. Presentation is everything and it needs to be larger. Go 1200px to 1400px longest side when it's a landscape photo and 900px tallest side when it's a portrait orientated photograph. Use photographer Zach Bright's free Photoshop action for this which uses luminosity masks in photoshop to resize & sharpen… (click "enjoy" at botton to download it).

The bright part at the top is a bit distracting and borderlines on a tangent which takes the viewers eyes off the main focus; the bee. That being said, you did a great job at holding back the highlights in it and didn't blow them out.

Your color here is quite eye catching and I like the way you desaturated the image a tad and used a lack of contrast. In a photo like this it works very well. It really brings the color palette out nicely.

The lens flare, while may be an issue for some doesn't bother me at all.

Your watermark, I am on the fence with. It's too small to actually read what it says. Instead of using that I would suggest using a proper signature created in Photoshop using a png. You find out how to do that here in this YouTube video by photographer Charley Pangus…

Overall conclusion; I like it! I think you did a great job, I just want to see it larger, on my 24" screen it's quite small.

Sloan's Lake in Denver, Colorado is one of my favorite local haunts and it always provides some great images for me. In this photograph, the sunrise was meeting golden hour as rain clouds hovered on the horizon creating some astounding light. To get the shot I used a ND400 backed up by a CPL and a s stop Grad ND to get an exposure of 20 seconds. I hope you all enjoy it.

DD worthy

Journal Entry: Thu Sep 7, 2017, 3:36 PM
These days it's difficult to find photography on here which really stands out. I mean REALLY stands out, especially since DA isn't attracting the people it once did and so many here have left for other sites. That being said, incredible work can still be found and seen on here & you just have to know where to go to find it.

I thought I would share with all of you work that I would give DD to if I was still a volunteer. These images IMHO all deserve it & are worthy. Amazing work. Inspiring work. Incredible work.
