I know the shading sucks, but it's only my second try and this was as good as I could get it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do on this piece to make it look better?

Beautiful Orca! Is this supposed to be a girl or a boy? Because despite the somewhat masculine physique, it has a female dorsal fin. Males have tall straight fins about 2 meters tall, while females have short curved fins less than 1 meters tall.

tbh i didn't even think about it. I would just call this a subadult and leave it at that.

In that case, he/she is quite a strong looking fella, especially for a teen.

May I ask a stupid question that probably everyone has the answer too, but I chose to ask on this piece of art for a particular reason. . .

What do you use to make your art? Is it Graphic or just a Drawing? Do you use Adobe? Which one?
(that was more than one question :3)

I drew the lines with copic multiliners on a piece of ordinary printer paper, then I scanned it in to photoshop, set the lineart layer to multiply and colored in layers below. I highly recommend working with the GIMP as it provides many of the same basic functions as photoshop, but for free.

very nicely done ^^ though I'm not a great fan of anthro I still think it looks quite authentic. I couldn't have done it better myself :) (my human anatomy sucks most of the time, that's why I prefer drawing animals :slow:)

Heh, I want to be able to draw everything well enough to get my point across, which leaves it pretty open ended where I aim to end up artwise. I can't draw human faces, and my male bodies aren't the best, but if I need to draw females, I can just strip down in front of a mirror for reference.

I draw a lot of anthro because as I mentioned, I can draw human bodies fairly well, but not faces. Plus I like merging animals of different sorts. I'm going to start a contest-thing at some point that is for outrageous combinations of animals to be a "griffin" (inspired by such combinations as owl-lynxes and hawk leopards) I'm going to draw a phorusrhacos-cheetah lol

Great job on this! You've got an interesting subject (I don't think I've ever seen an anthro whale before), an interesting pose, and the coloring/shading turned out wonderful!

Using the lighter blue on the edges works well to give the impression that his skin is shiny and slippery, exactly what you'd expect for a whale! If you wanted to do more shading, you could try adding light shadows to the inside of his mouth, below where his arm rests against his chest, etc. I'm not sure if you need to do more shading... it might make the pic look too cluttered.

Thanks, actually I've seen a few anthro orcas before... but I haven't seen any baleen whales yet :plotting: I'm glad it turned out so well, I drew this with hardly any reference, the body was all free hand, and the head was from a couple of less thn stellar pictures. To learn that I actually pulled off what I'd attempted in what was just a quickie on the side art is very encouraging to me, and a sure sign I am indeed improving.

That's fantastic! really nice and clean, great linework and nice highlighting

i think if you wanted to add more effect you could have a new layer set to white colour with soft edges, and just have some white highlights around certain rounded areas, i would imagine his skin would be smooth and shiny, and would pick up the brightest part of the light. or maybe even add the effect of him being wet, depending if he is actually sumberged in water or not.

I was originally going to do him above water and shiney, but decided I liked him better with an underwater feel, mostly its just supposed to look like scattered soft lighting.

It looks very... I don't know the word for it, solid? Tangible! Maybe... anyway, I mean something like that. And it's in a good way. It just seems like I could wrap my arms around it and actually FEEL it. XD

Hi There!
You have just earned yourself an O.D.D.(^oibyrd's daily devs) feature :winner:! congrats!!! !
O.D.D.S are to honor the sometimes overlooked artists of dA that I personally think deserve some exposure and also, to introduce the more popular artists to the new/overlooked deviants. I prefer to showcase ALL artwork that I love (and that includes popular artists with a fair amount of traffic to their work) in order to create a non-biased feature of the talent on dA. *PLZ DO KEEP IN MIND - some of the features are quite popular and obviously don't need extra help - however - I enjoy posting them because they inspire other artists. Please click the link below to see your work featured and to view other featured artists . If you prefer not to be a featured artist, just send me a note titled REMOVE and I will remove you from the list. Cheers!

Thanks! ^^; Though really Orcas aren't that rare, I've seen several. My own animal anthro self is rarer, few people even know that the Striped Hyena exists outside of its home range(or at least thats the way it seems sometimes).

I agree with Jianre, I don't see anything wrong with the shading, I like it a lot. (and I'm not just saying that to be nice, I really do like it.)
