Affliction

"You are my affliction."—Nosferatu

So yeah, I've become somewhat hyperfixated with Robert Eggers' recent version of Nosferatu and I don't think anyone who knows me personally is surprised. I love anything that is rich with oneiric essence; anything gothic and romantic; anything that tiptoes the lines between the beautiful and the beastly and like Bram Stoker's Dracula before it, Nosferatu embodies all that and more. I love the attention to detail that Eggers puts into all of his period pieces and in this film, he has a good understanding of how women and female sexuality was viewed and treated in the Victorian period. I love how Count Orlok personifies Ellen's sexuality as well as her shame surrounding her sexuality. I was especially blown away by Lily Rose-Depp's fearless performance as Ellen Hutter and the exquisite monster makeup (which, yes, was lots of fun to draw) on Bill Skarsgard. Truly a cinematic masterpiece of the horror genre.
