is there also some way of customize the start button in the left sidebar?
Kishan-Bagaria's avatar
Yes, I think this should do it if you haven't already tried it: www.door2windows.com/windows-8…

Thank you very much for your fast answer. Sadly this beautiful program can not change the start button on the left sidebar. To make it more clear I have added a

Hopefully that will dispel misunderstandings. Thank you for your help.

I understand what you're trying to change. I'm sorry I don't know how to change that.

That part has completely changed in Windows 10, which I'm running right now and so I can't find it.

Whenever I change an icon on the charms bar, my custom start button removes itself. Can I not have both at the same time?

It happens because both apps edit the same file (C:\Windows\system32\twinui.dll). It shouldn't be working that way, I'll fix this in an upcoming release but for now you can do the following:
1. Change start button.
2. Move C:\Windows\system32\twinui.dll.backup to your desktop.
3. Change charms bar.
You can also exchange Steps 1 & 3.

When you want to restore, follow the steps listed here: www.door2windows.com/windows-troubleshooting/

I followed the steps, but for some reason before and after moving that file, my charms bar is only different while it is transparent. Once it looses it's transparency it goes back to normal. I appreciate the reply. I guess I'll keep an eye out for the next release.

You have to close the apps between the steps. After changing everything in Charms Bar Customizer, close it.

I didn't realize the program was only meant to change the icons while the Charms Bar is transparent. I got confused and thought it wasn't working properly, but it does. ^^;
Kishan-Bagaria's avatar
No, it can customize both, when the Charms Bar is transparent and when its background is black.

I haven't been able to get anything to change while the background is black.
Kishan-Bagaria's avatar
That's strange. Did you try a different pic?

When I tried to install it, it said 'product configuration is missing'. Same with the Start Button Changer

Edit: Download the zip file worked for the Start Button Changer, but the charms bar installer still wouldn't work & deleted itself

Edit 2: Got them working. For some reason They will only work if my virus protection is turned off. WHY??

Will this let me get rid of the god awful text on the charms bar?
Kishan-Bagaria's avatar
No, this app doesn't have that functionality.

Darn :-(

The charms bar is getting killed in the next Windows version anyway.

It is possible to remove it on Windows 8.1 though, if you *really* want to remove them, I'll send you a replacement system file.

False. The charms bar is staying. You're wrong.

which software did u use to develop these apps . Ur app is editing the imageres.dll  file in the system32 folder in windows folder . How did u edit them , i mean to say how did u edit them without the use of Resource Hacker ?
Kishan-Bagaria's avatar
Resource Hacker isn't the only app which can edit resources. I made my apps using VB.NET using Visual Studio.

it crashes explorer.exe every time I try to use it, I got to sign out and sign back in just to fix it. So apparently it doesn't like update 1....because thats what I am on and this doesn't do anything except crash my system
Kishan-Bagaria's avatar
For the time being you can also run "tskill explorer".

I'll release a better app soon.
