It will be a year this May 31, when the events of the El Reno Tornado will have occurred. The polarizing death of Tim and Paul Samaras and Carl Young will forever be cemented on the 40 year history of stormchasing. Many question remain in the wake of their loss and some things will never be known.
I never knew Tim personally, but his loss was felt even by me an avid storm researcher for many years of my life. In fact to make it even more close to home, we both inspired by the same film to research tornadoes: The Wizard of Oz. In the months since his death I found myself scouring the net and any news source to piece together his final moments, trying my damnedest to figure out what went wrong. The only conclusion is that tornadoes are and will always be unpredictable. Along the way I learned many valuable lessons that I think everyone should know.
