Sacks on the mouth

its certainly plausible. though maybe the cavity was filled with blood vessels in order to cool down blood, similar to an elephants ears or they used them to heat the air whean it was cold out side. or maybe it was a membrane but not as elaborate as some have shown? we will probebly never find out thoúgh

Interesting as this is, I highly doubt a ceratopsian had inflatable nasal sacks. It's understandable for a hadrosaur because vocal amplification is one of their key aspects. But a ceratopsian already has a large frill and horns to call attention to itself. I might see this as plausible if the sacks inflated to maybe a third of the size you've depicted, but such large balloons seem unconventional for animals with spears and a shield on that same head.

Perhaps they were used to attract mates?

These dinosaurs already had large horns and an even larger frill that likely would've been brightly colored during the mating season. Both of these combined, I find it doubtful that they would've needed inflatable nasal sacks to attract a mate, even vocally (just look at the vocal amplitude of a male elk during the rut). I think the most likely reason for that large airspace was just to allow some extra heat loss through the skull, no balloons required.

This is interesting, maybe it was used as a "sound intensifier" to threaten rivals and predators.

Wouldn't the horns do that?

Only if the predator could see the trike. The call would be useful trough miles

Guess that's one way to compensate for the solid frill.

So chasmosaurines would be a sort of  frigatebird and bladder nosed seal combo with those inflatable display features.

This is an excellent depiction of this speculative idea! Great work! Also, love the keratinous cover your gave t the frill!

Just something I realized today: Thomas Holtz on the DML mentioned that the consensus on the Montana Dueling Dinosaur ceratopsian is most likely a Triceratops. That specimen was found with large polygonal scales on its frill, so the keratinous frill idea may not hold true now.

Much appreciated! I tried a few different techniques on the frill to make it look  keratinous, and I settled on this iridescent, fairly bumpy one :)

It's just like when a frog puffs up its throat pouch to make its croaking sound louder when it does its mating calls. Those nasal pouches reminds me of that fact.  Perhaps the likes of Triceratops does the same thing similar to the frog.

Lovely. I can imagine the beautiful music they could have made.

The only thing I don't quite like are the little turkey-like thingies on the bottom of the airsacks. Maybe it feels off because most such structures Ive seen are actually rather smooth when inflated.

Thank you! I put the caruncles on it to balance between Brian Enghs smooth one and Darren Naish's very strange looking one indeed. I do think smoother may be more plausible, maybe I'll do an edit one day :)
