Proud - My Blood by kingpin1055 Proud - My Blood by kingpin1055
Being both gay and a graphic artist, I decided to put together the concept for a range of T-shirts which would allow members of the LGBT community to show their pride in who they were, without the design being too gaudy or flamboyent.

Although we now live in more tollerant times than the days when raids on gay bars were common, and when even being gay was illegal... we members of the LGBT community are still sadly on the receiving end of an incredible level of hate and intollerance, often due to incorrect information, or simply from those with an agenda who see us as something evil, something to be feared...

Helping to combat those are the It Gets Better foundation, and Wipe Out Homophobia, as well as International Day Against Homophobia, with the hope of being able to bring a better life to those who are going through the confusing and difficult time of discovering their sexual identity.

Although I'm one artist, I wanted to create a design inspired by the spirit of those who've been bloodied and bruised by the intollerant, but who've continued the fight for equal rights.

You can break my nose and split my lip, but my blood will remain as human as yours.

Rainbow flag: Gilbert Baker
T-shirt template: Emptees

So true. I love how the red runs likes blood onto the other parts of the flag. Awesome.

Thank you. Reflecting droplets of blood helped to tie into the concept of the anti-LGBT violence we can often be on the receiving end of, with visual and the text combining to represent the spirit we feel in not allowing ourselves to be trodden under foot. The red on the flag has been said to represent living, and through this design it also ties into the older word associated with red: passion.

is this quote yours? and if it is, is it free for others to use?
I will give you credit of course.

This quote is exactly what I was looking for...

It is mine, at the very least if I was influenced by another quote then it was subconciously. I have no objection to it being used with credit. :)

I'm glad that it's helped to put some things you were looking for into words.

Depending on the specifics of those T-shirt printing websites, we might already have enough to get the ball rolling. It's something I'll be looking into soon.

Thanks. As I plotted it out I mulled over the quote from The Merchant of Venice:

hurt with the same weapons, subject
to the same diseases, heal'd by the same means,
warm'd and cool'd by the same winter and summer
as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed?
If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us,
do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?

- William Shakespeare

I hadn't actually seen the full speech from Shylock until just now as I compiled this post, the selection section certainly has more than a few echoing notes with what a lot of us have, will and could go through.

And in addition to highlighting that there are so who are attached for nothing more than being gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender, it's also designed to highlight the resiliance a lot of these individuals have: they may be injured, but it only serves to strengthen their spirit in facing their oppressors.

Oh yeah! I remember reading that from English class! That's a great quote. Hm, and a great point you make there. Your work is very inspirational! I believe there is a quote, "What doesn't kill you will make you stronger". I think it'll make you stronger if you learn from it, and don't let the negativity of things eat you away. Wonderful that you've also highlighted the strength. =)
