Can't Beat The Fleet

Acryllics and watercolours, from my sketchbook. Pretty old by now.

A tribute to the early 80's Japanese show X-Bomber, known as Star Fleet in the west. It was a puppet show along the lines of Gerry Anderson's work only it was created by Go Nagai (of Devilman fame), so inevitably, by the time the series had finished, only about a quarter of the cast lived.

Brian May loved it, and so should you!

If I were doing the publicity for a movie or other big-budget reboot of Star Fleet/X-Bomber, I think the Brian May song would play over the first proper trailer.

Yes it would and it would be awesome!

Go Nagai would be impressed (hopefully)

Star Fleet/X-Bomber was a great show. I wish it aired here in America :(

It is a great show; Commander Makara was a pretty intimidating villain, she kinda has a smaller face on her own one that would speak in a male voice at times.

Yeah It's cool!

I feel both the Dai-X and Govarian are the most underappreciated Nagai mechs

I agree and Mazinger is one of the most OP Nagai mecha ever!!!!!!!! I'm making my own show in the same style, called "Gashlan the Mighty".  The story is this:

In the year 3023; Earth becomes part of an intergalactic war against a race of evil aliens known as the “Ziracons”; their leader Zarabrak wants to destroy the Earth so he can rebuild it in the form that he desires. But the Space Defence Squadron (SDS) is the only ones standing in Zarabrak’s way; aided by the half sentient, half pilotable alien Mecha known as Gashlan.

What do you think, is this a good idea?

I like it actually

It reminds me somewhat of my first idea for a mecha series that has since evolved into what I call the Dai-Man trilogy (Dai-Man, Superior Dai-Man and Dai-Fighter) It's like a retelling of both Mazinger and Johnny Sokko almost. With a few twists though

Set initially in 2026, The main character is a Gynoid named Sasha who is apart of the UKH (United Kaiju Hunters) and possesses the 30 meter tall mecha Dai-Man and possesses a telepathic bond with which she gained from a mad scientists who came to her aid after she had been caught in a train crash caused by a giant monsters and soon fought off that monster with the mech and joined the UKH by being convinced by a human named Michael who was a member of the American division.

Overtime lost civilizations like the Mu Empire and mechanized Terrorist groups like X-Crusher attack Earth leaving Dai-Man the only one to stop them. In the last episode Dai-Man fights and X-Crusher experimental robot called the Mars Vanguard which inside possesses a live nuclear device which the now fully sentient Dai-Man seemingly sacrifices himself to stop it by diving into the sea far away from land and seemingly blows himself up with the mech (or so Sasha and the others initially think, really he in fact survived the explosion, more on that later) and at this point (2027) a new mech, Superior Dai-Man is built to replace Dai-Man which actually can be piloted in a cockpit and still has to fight off the X-Crusher and Mu threat as well as a new enemy, an alien bounty hunter named Zargon who has access to Hyperspace, which in it has some of the most powerful alien creatures in existance at his disposal.

Soon Sasha gains assistance from an alternate universe version of herself and that Sasha's mech Saturn and the two become a duo of sorts. Eventually in a final battle with all three threats, Zargon reveals his true form, a monsterous being called thr Garabon which manages to destroy Saturn with the AU Sasha being unharmed and Superior Dai-Man severely damaged until the original
Dai-Man shows up at the last minute to finish off Garabon and the Remaining Mu and X-Crusher forces and by 2028 Superior Dai-Man is repaired and given to the AU Sasha to replace her old mecha and Sasha and Dai-Man reunited.

In Dai-Fighter , it's been a decade after the events of the original Dai-Man and Sasha is now a part of a space program who finds out that Zargon had been hired by an alien robot named Calibra and her and her empire plan to invade Earth. Soon Sasha's new mecha, now named Dai-Fighter has to fight off Calibra and her footmen for the fate of Earth.

There'd also be an epilogue Dai-Man: Endgame which deals with Sasha having been reunited with her old team, now the K 2 team and as Earth is threatened by an unknown force with an army of Kaiju, alien and seemingly now sentient former X-Crusher mechs that were previously unknown to the world, Sasha and Dai-Man have to fight together one last to fight off this final threat

What do you think of mine?

Your idea is pretty cool; by the way, are you doing yours in hand drawn animation? Mine is going to done in the same style as X-Bomber (Which is also Star Fleet over here.) with the puppets and the models.

Mine is like I-Zenborg. The humans, Androids, animals and some aliens are in hand drawn while The mecha's and monsters and other aliens and buildings and explosions are like a Tokusatsu show

Just saw the clips of the "movie" version on You Tube. I gotta say, it's actually pretty good! I'm used to Godzilla-level SPFX and the voice dubs are on par with the best anime dubs! The story's basic but smart and fun space opera!

I just took a look at the series and being an avid fan of Gerry Anderson's techniques, I loved it! It reminds me of Gerry's "Terrahawks" series, which dosen't surprise me as they were both made in 1983 or around that time....

I think that Star Fleet was actually the inspiration for Gerry Anderson to try the rod method of puppetry...

Very, very nice :) Good to see such a tribute to such a classic show. I rewatched it recently on DVD, and in hindsight its amazing how dark a show it actually is, how many people get bumped off by the final episode!

Thanks!

And I know! They wouldn't get away with it in a kids show these days.
