The Last Temptation by KingaBritschgi The Last Temptation by KingaBritschgi
Lately I have been discovering and re-discovering more and more female surrealists; I met many of their works back at my art history courses of course (I even wrote several essays in this topic) but then I looked at them with totally different eyes. Anyway, Dorothea Tanning, Bridget Bate Tichenor, Eileen Agar, Leonor Fini, Remedios Varo, and others are immense inspirations for me nowadays - and this work, The Last Temptation, is one of the results of my enthusiasm.

Please feel free to delete this comment after providing ample time for me to read the reply, as I have a feeling I'm about to ask a stupid question. Little sleep, little time, little time to sleep, and even less time to spend viewing artwork=I haven't given this piece the consideration it deserves. However, I was drawn to it, so (oh, no pun intended-YES!) spoiler please? Is it suicide?
Thanks, and again, my apologies. Looks great, btw. There's still a lot I don't understand, but I'll look at it again. Oh, and I will be watching. ;)

Bill,

First, thanks a lot for the question and the comment. I don't have any intention to delete it - why should I? In fact, I wish there were more commenters who take time to look at art in more depth than a simple 'great job' (which I appreciate too though).

Anyway, as for your question - it is not stupid at all. Here is what I think about interpreting an artwork in general: the artist - usually - has some kind of idea, message, whatever that they want to convey. S/he might or might not reveal it verbally (in the description, in the title, etc). But - and here is the most important point - this is only one part of interpreting an artwork. The other part is submitted by the audience - how and what they can see 'in' the piece. And, still important, these two parts are equally important and they together create an authentic aesthetic interpretation of an art piece.

I wrote this long introduction because I wanted to explain why I generally don't like to give any direct 'hint' on what I want to convey. However, I don't have any problem either to reply to a question regarding my intentions with my works - I just wanted to be sure that your opinion, your interpretation is as 'correct' as mine. So it might be suicide, yes. And it might be a general/symbolic view of any 'last' temptation we bump into; the naked body might be a symbol of our defencelessness, our helplessness too. As for the adjective, 'last' - well, it can be a last temptation in a relationship of ours, a last temptation in our life, a last temptation in our 'old life' before we move onto something new, and so on, and so forth.

Thank you again for visiting Bill!

:) I just love your use of light KingaB, It was what attracted me to your work in the beginning. I'll investigate the surrealists you mention.

Thank you, David. I have always felt my lights are very studio-like/dramatic/very definite; which I actually happen to like but I am not sure that they are plausible in some cases :D

:) I happen to like it too. Plausibility is hardly required in surrealism, marked as it is by the hyper reality of dreams.

:) Yes, it sounds surreal to use the term 'plausibility' in surrealism, doesn't it :D
Anyway, you know what I mean ;)
