Paradise, i am coming...

Well.... that brought me to the brink of insanity and back! :D
About 24 hours with photoshop and wacom tablet.
I tried to get across an eerie feeling of weariness with her expression and the lighting.
References to help with the face came images of Megan Fox and salma Hayek. I tried to render the face stocky to make her look like she could handle a fight. I also used some deep sea diving suit references to help with the armour.
I’ve learnt a few things from this portrait and some weaknesses that i have to address. I think that i need to practice the form principle more – i think her face may look a little flat. Im always chasing those perfect colours as ever. I also have to work on some decent brushes for those pesky pores.
Any criticism is welcome from any of you pros out there – i’d really appreciate that.

First, the criticisms:
- Her eye level is not perpendicular to her face, but rather it is canted to the right (her left) by about five degrees. A nuance such as this can quickly throw an otherwise gorgeous composition into the uncanny valley.

- There's a minor lighting error with the neck-level hair on the left (her right). The primary back-light should be occluded by the shadow from her head and neck.

Now, the praise:
+ Material shading is gorgeous. The subsurface scattering of the back-light through her ear and cheek give the flesh a convincing appearance. The specular highlighting and obtuse reflection give the armor a solid, pseudometallic look, and minutiae such as the small scratches and thin layer of dust give the suit a rendered quality. The hair is tousled and agitated, and is portrayed with proper weight, volume, and form, and the windswept appearance is a nice touch.

+ The character's expression shows clear fatigue with more than a little introspection. The sparks flying in her direction evidence a recent battle or explosion. The fusion of those two factors create a story, one where the character has just witnessed or caused great destruction and now looks on with apathetic amusement.

+ The suit is reminiscent of the Mobile Infantry power armor from the Robert Heinlein novel Starship Troopers (not the movies), very practical and functional in appearance, but not invulnerable as is evidenced by the frontal damage.

= This composition is clearly a work of love and dedication. No detail was spared in its crafting. Vision gets 5/5.

= The concept of a powerful armored character in the aftermath of a battle is nothing new, however the down-to-earth expression and slight vulnerability of the battle-worn veteran wielding such power is an underdeveloped trope. Originality gets 3.5/5.

= The rendering of this character, sans a couple of blemishes, is flawless. Your lighting is accurate and your eye for materials is uncanny. Technique gets 4.5/5.

= The composition conveys a clear and powerful story while leaving the details to the imagination. The mid-afternoon lighting is organic and frames the scene well. Impact gets 4.5/5.

Well done. Thank you for your work.

You are very kind. You know i look at it an see nothing but errors. I think the armour is good - that came from my brain, but her face is heavily referenced, and if i could paint a face without reference it might look better. I working on it! :) thank you for your critique.

Megan Fox if truly a have done her justice here...I am one who just believes (not in your case) that she has too much exposure...

First, let me talk about her look of fatigue...she has it, kind of like"oh not more killer robots..." she has a sexy look to her (i.e. her face has a couple of scrapes, no big wounds)...her hair has that hept but work out/ fighting sweaty look...that really makes the image and her...

Her helmet has been damaged enough that she can't wear excellent action shows a bit of weakness but she can still keep her head high...

I love the sparks flying everywhere...any piece of art with some type of action like that just makes you wonder what is causing all of that and its a really cool effect...

I'm glad the background is smokey and not busy with other action...

The damage on the armor is cool also...

I know you worked hard on this...and it shows...keep up the good work.

This is truly an AMAZING painting. You realy are talented. The feeling in her eyes. You can "feel" the experiense she has gone through. AND the mouth tells you she dont take sh** from noone. The lighting is top nodge. Love the sparks? Amber glow flying around her, and the hair is amazing. The wounds on her just makes her more real and the armor is very cool looking. Only thing "wrong" with her is her nose. looks a bit flat to me. And the backgraund could have a more.. ehhh ambient glow? I see the smoke but I don't feel the rubbles or what ever is burning out there. Still A TOP painting and I wish I had HAlf your talent. You are on my watch list from now on and an imsperation to all. <img src="…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>
Amazing art! Is this a 40k picture by chance? It looks like shes wearing some variant of power armor

Always been a big 40k dweeb so probably some influence from that :)
Haha yeah i saw the sister of battle and the servo skull, both also very nice btw, and assumed. She looks like an astra militarum character i made for my homebrew stuff but when she was younger

Far so awesome, professional looking quality. Sure thats is a true piece of work that everyone would like to put as a cover, book illustration, and so on.
Kimonas's avatar
Hehe hey thanks buddy! I feel im getting there but not quite professional looking yet - I have to sort out a few things - but thankyou, means a lot!
XolarDark's avatar
No prob. I think your quality level is stunning, and the good is you can made on those like that in relatively short time is a good think. Anyone normally would take weeks or months to finish something with that detail. It mean you can work for a professional studio that requires quick artwork creation.

Hey thanks for the heads up! I doubt the individual is making money off the back of my work, it seems he has uploaded loads of work that isn't his/hers.
MistyPandora's avatar
Yeah i think everything on his account is stolen. No problem, people who work so hard on their art should know. :)
