Okay chance darts! Let's see what's next to talk about.
Okay Bishonen characters. Now then, which one?
Rei? Which one? Across the world of manga, there's more than one character with that name.
Disney? Oh... I get cha!
Hello everyone. 4Soldiers here. The ones bringing you apocalyptic futures, characters molded to be like Disney Princesses, to role models that go full circle (Erika was at the wedding in the final volume); here we bring you a new challenge: Who is Rei?
Rei is an enigma character from start to finish. Not much is known about him until he starts to remember who he is. Which raises more questions. Rather than ask who IS Rei, we should be asking who WAS Rei.
In the first manga, Rei is introduced to us as a sarcastic young man with a regal atmosphere who just happen to be sleeping in front of Kilala's parent's house. As revealed in the story, Rei suffers from Amnesia. He can't remember much about his past except that he is Paradiso's prince, his bodyguard is Valdou (Or so Valdou claims), and Sylphy is an old friend of his that claims to be his fiancee. Oh almost forgot the mission to find the owner of the magical crown.
Throughout the story, he get little tidbits about his background from either Valdou or himself. Now before we continue to cover Rei, let's talk about Valdou first. Valdou at first appears to be Rei's ally by acting as his bodyguard. Which raises more questions. The things that Valdou told Rei and Kilala... are they the truth or a lie he created to brainwash Rei?
Remember what happened in Volume 3? After Valdou reveals who he works for, he says this to Rei:
"It seems it wasn't enough just to erasing your memories. This time we'll do a thorough job brainwashing you."
Why did Valdou say that? Well, from that line, it's implied that they tried before to erase Rei's memories before Rei met Kilala. Which got us thinking: If Rei's memories were nearly wiped, then what was he doing in Avalon?
Rei may have been brought there by someone that wasn't Valdou. But why Avalon? Simple. The Princess Contest was happening there. Whoever brought him there was hoping that whoever won would be the princess he was looking for. It could be hinted that the one who saved him was a loyal soldier or better yet, Rei's father.
Remember our first Manga Theory? We hinted that whoever brought Rei to Avalon may have been related to him. The only person that would have done this would have been the King in secret. Unfortunately, from reading Volume 3, it's hinted that his father was found, captured, and later executed. However, what's not being said is how he was found. Valdou claims to be Rei's bodyguard... but what if he was the one that lead the Humanoids to the King and Rei's location?
In Volume 1, Valdou is introduced in the story in finding Rei in Kilala's house. Judging from the bag he was carrying, he had gone out for food to keep Rei healthy until he returned to Paradiso. The fact that he is the only one with the prince is very suspicious. Which leads to another question: Why was Rei outside of Kilala's house? Two things: Either the crown lead him to her or he was trying to escape and find what happened to his father. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough energy to keep going and collapsed in her yard.
So judging from this scene, Rei may have not popped out of nowhere magically. He may have been trying to escape his captor before he forgot why he was out there. Fast forward through the second volume, he starts to get his memory back that his home is in ruins and that he's a prince. Which brings us to the 4th volume. The one that introduces Sylphy. Sylphy claims to be Rei's fiance, but the manga jokes that it's unofficial. However, what if it was?
The ring Sylphy wore that got swallowed by Cogsworth by accident may have been an engagement ring. Given by who though? Why Rei of course. Even though Rei's memories are scrambled, he does remember Sylphy. Just... not as Sylphy remembers him. Right off the bat, Sylphy is a total jerk when she is introduced. She's snooty, spoiled, and judgmental.
This leads to even more questions about Rei. If Rei remembers Sylphy, then who is she to him? We don't know what kind of person Rei was before the memory erase. However, from Sylphy's attitude, it could be implied that he was just as horrible as she was. He may be upset when he see's the treatment Sylphy pulls on Kilala, but maybe it could be that he's recalling his old memories of before he met Kilala: He's upset with Sylphy not because of just who she is, but possibly for the fact that he's now confronting his old self. Sylphy's engagement may have been a poor decision he made before meeting Kilala.
Sylphy may have been an old childhood friend he remember growing up with. But once his memories were scrambled, he had to face the truth of who he originally was: A horrible prince who lead his home to destruction. Seeing her, it appears that he's accepting his old demons by acknowledging that he was possibly as rotten as Sylphy before the memory wipe. By rejecting her as his fiance, he's letting her know that he's not the same person she remembered him for. From this, he appears to be trying to turn a new leaf.
Sylphy is not happy with this. Rather than belittling Rei, she decides to mistreat Kilala by pointing out her flaws and weaknesses. When Kilala and Rei end up saving the day in Aurora's world, she realizes that she's in trouble: Rei has truly turned a new leaf. Seeing this, she knew what she had to do. She had to bring him back to Paradiso. When Sylphy betrays him, she may have done so in hopes that Valdou will "fix" him into his old self. That's why she was happy to kiss the side of his cheek: She was going to get her future husband back. Rei, after escaping with Kilala, realizes that he doesn't want to be his old self again and decides to atone for his mistakes. And his first action... Leaving Sylphy behind and branding her a traitor.
Kilala of course is concerned about the bloody confrontation that will happen next. So she decides to go back and save Sylphy by convincing her that Rei worries about her. Notice, she didn't say that Rei still "loves" her. She said that he is "worried" about her. It's not a lie, but it gives Sylphy hope that Rei will remember her as his future wife.
Despite the fact that Kilala was trying to save Sylphy, he had accepted that he no longer wants his real memories back. From seeing and hearing Sylphy, it made him realize the true ugliness of who he was in the past. In fact, he has many reasons to believe that it's because of his behavior on why his father is dead. We don't know how Paradiso was before the war. Kilala claims that it's a place where dreams are made, but what if there was an uglier background within Paradiso?
Meaning one thing, Rei believes that Paradiso's destruction was contributed by within. Whatever the people did, whatever he did, whatever the royal family did contributed to the up rise of the Humanoids was made by the hands of man.
Knowing this, Rei decided to fulfill his royal duty for his ruined home: Undo the mistakes made upon it. Specifically, the creation of the Humanoids.
