This is a collage of how the SSB4 roster should have been.
Row 1: The original eight from SSB 64.

Row 2: The returning eight from Melee.
-(Bowser, Peach, Zelda, Sheik, Marth, Mr. Game & Watch, Falco, Ganondorf)
Row 3: The first eight returning characters from Brawl.
-(Meta Knight, Pit, Zero Suit Samus, Wario, Ike, Charizard, Diddy Kong, King Dedede)
Row 4: The other returning characters from Brawl, plus the 3rd-party four.
-(Olimar, Lucario, R.O.B., Toon Link, Snake, Sonic, Megaman, Pac-man)
Row 5: Two of Project M's biggest stars, plus the other cut characters.
-(Roy, Mewtwo, Ice Climbers, Pichu, Lucas, Wolf, Squirtle, Ivysaur)
Row 6: The newest default characters of SSB4.
-(Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina (and Luma), Little Mac, Greninja, Palutena, Robin, Shulk)

Note: I put Ridley in place of Knuckles, because he was yet another Sonic character in a Nintendo game, as opposed to a SEGA rep. Plus, there's a Ridley mod out their that someone really worked hard on. As for Sami, since she didn't get anywhere close to being developed before the disband, she wouldn't be included. But for you Official Nintendo©®™ enthusiasts, Master Hand, Crazy Hand and Tabuu go in their place.
As for the others, Pokemon Trainer does nothing, but since there are so many crybabies:
-Young Link is a texture model costume for Toon Link.
-Ninten is a costume for Ness.
-Alph and Louie are costumes for Olimar.
-Female Robin and Male Wii Fit Trainer are also there.
-Iggy, Morton Jr., Lemmy, Ludwig, Roy Koopa, Wendy, and Larry Koopa, part of Bowser. Jr.
-And Dr. Mario is part of a special custom costume set for Mario, along with Bee Mario, Tanooki Mario, Penguin Suit Mario, Cat Mario, Cloud Mario, and Maker Mario.
