There are several ways. I use Photoshop Elements 7, but all photo editing programs have pretty much the same controls.
You can adjust the Brightness/Contrast levels by decreasing the Brightness and increasing the contrast.
or
You can open your Levels tool. This should show you a histogram that is skewed to the right. That means that the majority of pixels in the photo are in the bright range. You should have three triangles under the histogram. Use the middle one (the mid tones) to adjust the levels. Move it to the right to increase the dark pixels. You might also have an Output bar or Brightness/Contrast. Play with that too till you get the desired effect.
or
Your editing program might have an Auto Levels or Auto Adjust, or Auto Fix button. Try that and see it it's smart enough to fix it on its own.
