What I and 2 friends of mine think is that from preschool to grade 2, Kai was sent to a private school for the 'gifted' children... Till the teachers and principal discovered that he was nothing but 'average' they made his mother locate him to the regular free school. Upset to find out her sweet little, 4 time winner of 'NeoTokyo's beautiful child pagents' was nothing but AVERAGE to the normal school he went.
Of course, with his amazing ego his mother gave him and self confidence (not to mention his height), he was an easy target for epic bullying. For the next 2 weeks he came home with a new injury crying about how some kid pushed/punched/kicked him and stole his whatever.
Until one day when Kai was being pulverized by a group of kids, one boy that always looked on from the jungle gym finally stepped up and beat the living shit out of half the kids there. After that, Kai was so greatful, he followed Yamagata like a lost puppy EVERYWHERE, Yama not even acknowledging him even being there. Then as time went on, Yamagata finally introduced Kai to Kaneda and Tetsuo.

When I first watched the movie I was convinced that Kei and Kaneda looked like they could have been twins (subsequent veiwings have ended that opinion but I kept expecting it to be a plot twist at some point)
