Bloodstone by Kezzi-Rose Bloodstone by Kezzi-Rose
Gorgeous exposed serpentinite in Coverack Cove on The Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall, captured on a rock-hunting adventure earlier this year

Serpentinite is a beautifully unusual rock type usually only found at the ocean floor, but is exposed on the most south-westerly tip of the UK
as part of a world-famous ophiolite complex (where part of the ocean crust was once thrust up onto the land). Here you can see a thin dolerite dyke within the host rock that's offset by a small fault, and the beautiful colours serpentinite expresses when wet. It can be blood-red like this, ranging to blueish and emerald-green (from which its name, likening it to a serpent, is derived).

Wooo geology!! :dummy:

Incredible! Wow! I've never had a chance to go to Cornwall but I hope to go in the summer of next year to look for fossils.
I'm going to the Isle of Arran in February! Hope to see some metamorphic rocks and geological structures! :D (Big Grin)

Thanks! I really hope you get to come to Cornwall, there are so many beautiful landscapes and hidden gems  It's not the best for fossils cause the rocks are super old, so the preservation isn't amazing, although you can find fish and plant fossils on the north coast between Boscastle and Bude c: Some people have found trilobites on Pendower Beach in the south though!! If you've never been to the south Dorset coast I really recommend hunting there for fossils, there are soo many around Lyme Regis and Charmouth!

Arran is excellent, is that for a fieldtrip? I went there in my first year of undergrad, you'll see plenty of awesome rocks and structures :la: I hope you get to see the giant centipede tracks!! Loads of pillow lavas in the north too c:

Ahaha I wonder why they're taking us to Cornwall then if the fossils aren't great?? XD

Yes, Arran is for a field trip. I dread the coach journey but yeah, it should be amazing! Thanks! :)
