Otherworlde BST 103: Bug and Bird
Jon had completed his assignments for two of his classes, at least. The only one left to go was BST 103. And he was… kind of dreading it, honestly. The first assignment was simple. That was just writing more reports. But no matter which one he chose for the other assignment, he would still have to come face-to-face with a wild animal and be able to defend himself from it if it attacked him. Sure, he liked fighting and competing, but that didn’t exactly involve wild animals. His younger sister Julia practiced kendo as a hobby and was certainly very happy to participate in competitions, but he doubted that she would want to fight a wild animal either.
At least designing a way to protect himself from a dangerous magical creature would definitely be fun. Jon knew that his Beast Studies professor really liked potions and potionmaking, so he wanted to do something with that. Maybe some kind of… bug repellant spray. He knew already that there were potions like that, particul

Jon already knew which two assignments he was doing for his BST 102 class. He was certainly willing to create diagrams of different crossbreeds and even turn himself temporarily into some sort of hybrid, but he was not about to go drawing out diagrams featuring the hypothetical children of students he didn’t even know. What kind of assignment was that? He definitely was starting to think that his Beast Studies professor was a little weird. At least the first assignment was simple enough, and the third one probably was not that dangerous. Jon had certainly spent a lot of time around potions before. His first part-time job had been taking inventory on them in a store in his supernatural hometown of Canto, Rhode Island.
The obvious choice for a non-magical crossbreed was a mule, the offspring of a female horse and a male donkey. Jon knew, both from his prior knowledge and the books that he had checked out from the library, that mules were both better-tempered and more intelli

Jon was somewhat disheartened by the fact that he had failed to get his work done during his first term at Otherworlde Academy. He suspected that his professor thought very poorly of him at the moment, since he had failed all of his classes. But all he had really been trying to do was survive. He knew ahead of time that the academy was a strange place where one could learn about all sorts of dark magic, but he had not been prepared for how hostile and dangerous it could be. At least by this point, he had been able to settle in, find a good dormitory room where nothing tried to attack him, and get to work on some of his assignments for Beast Studies. He was going to skip the actual expedition to the forest or desert or wherever he was directed to go. That did not seem safe, and he definitely wanted to make sure that he could fend for himself before he went off to who knew where in order to photograph magical creatures. Maybe he would do it on his own later on, but not now. It was

Otherworlde MDC 204: New Arm (a.k.a. Old Arm)
Amelia had only one more assignment to go in her MDC 204 class. She had successfully grafted skin from one patient – well, actually a lifelike mannequin with nearly identical biology to that of a human – to another, and had even successfully performed a replantation procedure on a severed finger (which she herself had severed, for the sake of the assignment). This time, however, she had an assignment on a significantly greater scale than either of the previous two. This time, she had to graft an entire limb, either an arm or a leg, back onto a body after it had been severed. Her professor had stated that the procedure was very similar to that required to replant a finger or toe, but on a much larger scale. Additionally, while Professor Raphael had stated that there was a time window of about twelve hours during which a severed finger or toe could be reattached to a patient, that window of time grew much shorter when it was a larger part of the body, such as an entire arm

Amelia had completed one of her assignments for her MDC 204 class, but she still had two more to go. Well, technically, she only had one more to go, but she was determined to do all three of them, just like every other class she had taken – and this would probably continue for every other class she would take in the future, as well, if she could manage it. This time, she had to reattach a severed finger or toe on a subject, whether that was a real person or a mannequin. Just like before, Amelia decided that she would perform the procedure on a mannequin, as this was the first time that she would be attaching a digit to someone, and did not want to run the risk of making a mistake with a real patient. Besides, if she tried to cut off someone’s actual finger, Cressida would probably yell at her, even if the finger were reattached perfectly without any long-term problems caused for the patient whatsoever. Amelia, pragmatic and interested in violence though she could be, still

Amelia may not have liked Professor Raphael’s stoic and impassive demeanor in comparison to the previous professor’s more manic energy, but she did like the assignments that he provided for his students. They were technical, practical, and effective. And this class seemed to be all about grafting. It could certainly prove interesting, she thought, being able to attach new skin or even limbs to living creatures. There were certainly a lot of people that could benefit from having more limbs, as far as she could tell, though it would probably also be more difficult to find shirts for them if they had, for example, more than two arms. More importantly, her professor had briefly mentioned the later MDC 403 class, where one would be capable of creating their own creature. That certainly sounded exciting to her. It would almost, perhaps, be like the way that she herself had been created, albeit using organic parts instead of mechanical ones. Would that, then, make Cressida some so

Amelia only had one more assignment to do for her Close Combat Psionics class. She could, presumably, pass the class without having to do the third assignment at all, but such a thing would not do for her. It was not good enough that she passed. She also had to actually make sure that she learned. That was what mattered the most, though from Amelia’s experience, that came along with getting high grades in her classes anyway. Besides, based on what her professor had said, the third assignment seemed like something that would be useful for her, especially as she planned to fight in the tournament the next time it came around. Amelia had already learned how to create a psionic knife blade, and she had been practicing with it, trying to create a sword instead. She was getting there, but she had not yet achieved it. She had checked out a lot of books at the library about swords so she could actually start learning how to use one, so there was that, at least. For Amelia’s

Amelia had finally been able to practice enough with her psionic magic that she could produce and sustain bursts of psionic power at will. Now, it was time for the second assignment in her Close Combat Psionics class. She would have to be able to take that energy and shape it further, to refine it one more time and produce a blade from it instead of just a burst of power. It needed to be in a suitable form for actual combat, not just some burst of energy with no direction to it. It had to be useful. It had to be effective.
Amelia could do useful and effective.
She doubted that she would be able to form an actual sword at this point. That would take too much power, and she was not sure if she would be able to safely expend it at this point in her magical education. Even if she were able to actually produce a particularly long psychic blade, it might be too mentally taxing. Psionics was a dangerous department. Although Amelia, cautious as she was, preferred to be fighting at long range if she actually had to fight, she still understood the value of learning to fight at close range as well. As such, she was going to try just as hard in her Close Combat Psionics class as she would in any other – especially as Professor Eden had said that this was probably one of the most difficult classes that one could take in the department, at least initially. If she could accomplish this, surely her professor would be proud of her, right? Cressida had always emphasized doing well academically and impressing people, back in the brief period of time before Amelia had actually enrolled in the academy.
Professor Eden had already warned her ahead of time. He had stated that it was difficult for someone to effectively focus their psionic power into a physical form, and that Amelia – and any other student – would surely fail multiple times until they learned how to physically express their psion

Amelia only had one more assignment to go in her Boomerang Magic class. This time, she had to not only successfully reflect a spell, but also send it back towards the caster at a significantly faster speed than it had been traveling when it had first been cast. She was able to reflect magic back to the caster now, but not particularly quickly. If anything, it was slower than how it had started. Amelia needed to improve – and as always, she wanted to do all three assignments in her class. She did not want to have any gaps in her knowledge. There was too much to know.
Amelia took the time to meditate for a while, to make sure that she did not overexert herself in her use of psionic magic. She always had to meditate whenever she did anything important with it, she decided. There were too many risks, and she had to minimize them. Especially now, when she would be taking spells – dangerous spells – and sending them back towards the caster. She was starting to get into uses

Amelia had succeeded in slowing down a spell in her first assignment in her Boomerang Magic class. She liked the class so far, and was certainly very glad that she had chosen to start learning everything she could from the Psionics department. But slowing down a spell was not enough. She needed to learn how to take spells cast at her and send them back, not just slow them down and get out of the way. If she could turn people’s magic against them, it would make her a lot more difficult to harm. Perhaps then, she could be more independent, and not have to rely as much on Cressida and other powerful people at Otherworlde Academy to make sure she was safe.
She knew that she could work with Cressida to keep practicing spell slowing and reflection with her psionic magic, but as far as she knew, Cressida was mostly just familiar with the cleaning spell, and she was not entirely sure if her ‘mother’ would be willing to actually cast potentially harmful spells at her in the fi

Amelia was quite interested in the ‘Boomerang Magic’ class that she was taking as part of the Psionics department. Since she was in two different departments at once, the other being Medical Studies, she was advancing somewhat slowly, but she was not about to let that deter her from continuing in both of them. She was certainly learning a lot of interesting things. And now she was going to learn how to reflect magic back towards the caster with her mental powers alone? Amelia was quite happy to get started with learning how to slow down and reflect spells.
Of course, that would require finding someone who would be willing to cast spells at her in the first place.
Amelia was not entirely sure that this was the kind of thing that she should be doing with another student. If she failed to slow or return a spell that someone cast at her, they might be able to exploit that and injure her, or something. Schrecken was not entirely sure why anyone would need to have toxic blood. Maybe if they were fighting a lot of vampires or something, but the only vampires that Schrecken had actually seen had been relatively friendly. He did not consider the possibility of making one’s blood into weapons, cutting someone with them, and then forcing the blood into their own bloodstream through the wound, nor did he consider that having toxic blood would allow someone to have easy access to poison no matter where they went or what the situation was. Those were not the sort of things that Schrecken thought about, usually. He might have indeed been correct that it would be useful against a vampire who wanted to bite you, but Schrecken’s blood, while no more dangerous on its own than any other kind of blood, tasted absolutely disgusting already.
On the other hand, having toxic blood would certainly be cool. He was learning all about blood magic, and… dark blood magic, however that

Students entering the Beast Studies building were likely to be able to find their destinations without getting lost, as long as they followed the trails of vines and other plants that Professor Cressida Hawthorn had set up. This time, they all led to one large room, which had been set up to accommodate the students. There was nothing particularly flashy about it, apart from the fact that there was some sort of large bird skeleton hanging from the ceiling, but it was certainly practical, with desks and enough space for everyone. Cressida herself, as usual, sat on her own desk at the front of the room.

"Hello, everyone, and welcome to Beast Studies, regardless of whether you're new to the department, an advancing student, or a... failing student who keeps trying," the witch began, trying to gauge the reactions of each of her students in turn. "Now, for those of you who are new, don't be put off by the seemingly dry and academic nature of these classes. By the end of your coursework here, you will be able to meet companion animals, turn into a spirit, breed completely new creatures, grant yourself new innate abilities, shapeshift and skinwalk, and even directly channel the powers of a god. That is, assuming you do well, pay attention, and stay relatively safe." Cressida nodded for emphasis. One day she would finally be able to finish changing the classes in full, but she had more research to do.

"Anyways, I'm Cressida Hawthorn, and I'm your professor, the sole authority in the Beast Studies department, and no, I am not looking for a student teacher at this time. I know you all have the potential to do well... so use it."

BST 101: Introduction to Cryptid Theory
BST 101 AssignmentsAssignment 1:
“The intersection of the magical world with the mundane world is really quite interesting,” Cressida began, “and nowhere is that intersection clearer than with sightings of cryptids. A cryptid is some sort of animal, or occasionally other form of life, that is generally hidden from the rest of the non-magical world, while still being present within it. Of course, you can often find cryptids in magical regions, as well, and perhaps some of you actually are cryptids.” That would certainly be interesting, Cressida decided. “There are all sorts of cryptids of all different types,” the witch explained. “One of my particular favorites is the Mongolian Death Worm. Look it up!”
The witch smiled at her students. This was an introductory class, after all, and so hopefully it wouldn’t be too difficult for people to pass.
“So, what you’re going to do for this assignment,” she continued, “

The creatures in the image seemed to move with a life of their own.
“Before you go about trying to produce new creatures – which, as this is a dark arts academy, I completely expect you to do once you start getting into the upper-level classes and possibly also taking some Medical Studies classes -- you’re going to need to do some research on existing ones. None of them are.”
Cressida clapped her hands together and stood up quite suddenly. “So! Because I’m a competent professor, I’m going to make sure that you’re all decently prepared to handle these creatures. Unless, of course, you simply choose to not pay attention.”

The witch unrolled an anatomical diagram of the human body, one of the kind that showcases the muscles and internal organs of a person. “Now, many creatures are associated with certain parts of the body. Either they come from those organs, or they consume them, or they have powers associated with them, or they simply happen to have them in some form that’s different from what a normal human’s got. Almost like a dramatic theater curtain, many of the vines hanging down behind Cressida were drawn away to the sides of the room, revealing a clearly impatient griffin and a small golem with glowing green eyes. “For example, a griffin such as Heracles here is a beast of the air, whereas a golem is an artificial creature of the earth. And yes, I created the golem myself. I have a rather… reactive form of magic.” The griffin stayed in place, but the golem tried to wander off and had to be stopped by Cressida’s plants. “You can find water creatures in even the most remotely magical body of water, suc

“It’s really no use to only learn about creatures on their own without understanding the conditions that allow them to survive, thrive and adapt,” Cressida began, remembering all the things that she had done when she herself had taken this class. “And that’s the purpose of this class. You’ll be learning about the various sorts of habitats where mythological creatures can live, and which sorts of creatures can live in different places.”
“So, to begin, let’s take a look at some relatively ordinary temperate-zone sort of places. We have both mountains and a forest just outside the campus, so that’s where you’ll be starting. You’ll need to go to one or both of those places and record what sort of magical wildlife you find there, as well as how they survive and any other information that you consider to be particularly interesting. You’re going to select a magical creature of some sort that could be considered a hybrid – preferably one that’s not exceptionally dangerous – and you’re going to study it. If you can find one in its natural habitat, that’s preferable, but there are quite a lot of unusual creatures kept near this very classroom as well.”

For this assignment, you will be taking care of an owl for a month. It’s all a bit Harry Potter, isn’t it?” The witch gave her class one of her signature brief half-smiles. “I’ve got a lot of them of various species down the hall, so you can pick one. Cressida honestly did not like this class very much. While the things that could be found underwater were quite fascinating and often very useful, the witch had a fear of drowning, and as such, she didn’t go around deep water all that much without the use of a potion to let her breathe underwater. So, perhaps unsurprisingly, she was not all that enthusiastic about teaching this class. “I’m going to proceed rather slowly with this class,” Cressida stated. “Before we get into observing any sort of magical aquatic creatures, we’ll look at ordinary fish. But we won’t be doing it here. You’re in an Advanced-level class, you can go places without dying, right? There was something moving inside each of the boxes… but if any students tried to open them up and see what was inside just yet, the vines would slap their hands away. Cressida would get to that in time. “In this class, we will be studying beasts of the earth. Such a classification encompasses quite a lot of creatures. On the one hand, you have golems, gargoyles, earth dragons, and other such things that use the very rock and ground beneath them to their advantage. On the other hand, you also have things like… what’s in your boxes.”
