OW Halloween Exchange: BAT-BOO
Schrecken was always excited for Halloween. It was his favorite holiday. An entire day, dedicated to dressing up in costume and scaring people? That was absolutely perfect. It was his favorite thing about having moved out from Germany to the United States (which was not actually something he had done entirely on purpose, but that was neither here nor there). Except, maybe, for Batman. He really liked Batman.
He was certainly excited to participate in the Halloween gift exchange. The person he was supposed to give a present to was Kami, who he had seen before in the tournament, though they had never actually fought. Maybe one day they would. It sounded like something that would be a lot of fun, though Schrecken was pretty confident that he would win if they ever did.
He quickly realized, however, that he had absolutely no idea what kind of things Kami liked. Of course, that wasn’t much of a problem for Schrecken. He would just give Kami some things that he liked, and make t

OW Halloween Exchange: Sugar and Spice
Jon was finally adjusting to life at Otherworlde Academy. Sure, going to a school to learn more about magic was a completely socially acceptable alternative in Canto to going to a real university, but this was definitely not the kind of place he had expected. He had spent most of his first semester just trying to survive against all the strange and sinister things that seemed to be present all throughout the academy. And he had missed the deadline for his assignments because of it. It was very embarrassing. He hoped he could make it up to his teacher, considering that she seemed relatively… stern. At least Professor Cressida wasn’t threatening to kill anyone or anything like that, and she had never actually dumped any garbage or excrement outside his dorm room like she had said she might. Even so, he had to get a hold of himself and start working up the student ranks so he could really be impressive.
At least a Halloween gift exchange was something that was relativel

OW Halloween Exchange: Witch's Brew
Cressida saw no reason why she shouldn’t sign up for a Halloween gift exchange. She could give people things, she could receive things, and maybe she would finally have more than one friend again. Maybe if she got out and about more, it would inspire more people to sign up for Beast Studies instead of things like Magical Linguistics. Besides, given how frequently she looked at people’s student records and tried to keep tabs on everyone, it would probably be relatively easy to get someone a gift for Halloween. Cressida had a tendency to give practical gifts. She had no interest in tricks or treats. But it would still be a Halloween-themed present, of course.
The person to whom she would be giving a gift was Alnnaja, a naga who was a student of Elementalism. That seemed simple enough. She could give him a gift that enhanced his elemental magic. Cressida herself had never taken a single class in the Elementalism department, but she did know quite a bit about elemental magic by

OW Halloween Exchange: Pumpkimo
This was the first time that Amelia had ever participated in any kind of Halloween gift exchange. Was this the kind of thing that people usually did on Halloween? She wasn’t really sure. She knew that they dressed up in costumes and went around to people’s houses and asked for candy, which seemed somewhat fun for those who could eat candy, if a bit irresponsible considering that candy was an unhealthy thing to eat. She decided, first of all, that whoever was receiving her gift would not receive candy. She was not about to be responsible for causing someone else’s tooth decay.
The person who had been selected to receive her gift was named Kimo, apparently. She had absolutely no idea who he was, and she had needed to get Cressida’s help in identifying the student. She thought he looked like a very interesting person, given that he had a bright red tail. Apparently, he was some kind of shapeshifter who was capable of flight, though Amelia had not gotten the chance

Otherworlde MDC 203: Assistance for the Mundane
Amelia only had one more assignment to go in her MDC 203 class. Technically, she had already passed the class, but she saw no need to just skip an assignment just because it did not have to be done for her grade. If anything, this was the most important assignment she had in her Healing Magic class in the first place. She had learned how to heal minor cuts and scrapes, and she could do that exceptionally well. She had learned how to treat internal injuries, such as fevers and migraines, and magically cure relatively ordinary illnesses such as influenza and the common cold. This time, however, she was going to be able to learn how to treat significantly more severe wounds. The example that her professor had provided was a very bad fracture of the radius where the bone had broken through the skin, but Amelia had other ideas about what she was going to do.
This time, she had no need to worry about contamination, as long as she herself used the proper protective equipment, such as surgical

Amelia had successfully used her newly learned healing magic to heal several minor cuts.
Which she had inflicted.
But it was on a mannequin this time instead of an actual person, so it was probably okay.
The next assignment that she had been given in her MDC 203 class was to heal an internal injury. Once again, the spell that was used did not require being spoken out loud, which Amelia appreciated. She wondered what it would do if she could say it to someone via telepathy from her Psionics classes. She was always looking for new ways to combine her two fields of magic. Professor Raphael had written the words of the healing spell up on the board for all the students to see, and Amelia had memorized it. She looked for patterns in the words of the healing spells that she was learning, wondering if there were ways that she could modify them to do even more things by altering the words that were used. She really did not understand why Cressida had so much disdain for the Magical Linguistics

Otherworlde MDC 203: Simple Healing
Amelia liked Professor Raphael’s take on Medical Studies so far. He seemed to be interested in weaponizing the department, but at the same time, had not forgotten its roots as a department of medicine. Amelia wanted to learn how to use her medical knowledge and magic to hurt people, but she also wanted to help them as well. There was no need to harm without the ability to heal, and vice versa. She wanted both. For now, the only Medical Studies class that she had taken this term was MDC 203, which was specifically about magical healing, but she was quite content with it. She was going to learn how to heal people with magic, both for minor injuries and much more severe ones. She could help people more effectively. She appreciated that, cruel though she could be. Besides, if someone was injured and you healed them, they would probably be more likely to do things for you. It was a matter of gratitude, which seemed like something that was surprisingly easy to exploit. Cressida had tol

Otherworlde PSI 202: Levitation Issues
Amelia only had one last assignment in her Intermediate Telekinesis class to go. And she had prepared for it extensively. It was almost time for the assignment deadline, but she was certainly not lazy – in fact, Amelia despised laziness and everything that came along with it. Instead, she had just been spending most of her time practicing with her psionic magic, lifting greater and greater weights, until finally she had reached an upper limit of about 250 pounds, just as Professor Eden had suggested. She wondered how many people on the campus actually weighed more than 250 pounds. Petrina, probably, but her conflicting animi meant that Amelia would never be able to pick her up anyway no matter how strong her telekinesis became.
But she could certainly try to lift herself, and probably someone else as well. She would start with herself, and then maybe find someone else to levitate. She was confident that she could do it now. Her psionic abilities were essentially a magical

Amelia had gotten her first difficult assignment out of the way in her PSI 202 class, Intermediate Telekinesis. She had successfully managed to work her way up to being able to lift fifty pounds with her psionic magic. It had taken several weeks and a lot of meditation in between all of her attempts, but she had done it. Now, the second assignment in the class was going to be a lot easier, at least compared to the first one, given Amelia’s general lack of raw power. She had to be able to pick up ten knives with her telekinetic abilities, all at once. Amelia had worked with multiple objects at a time before, but never ten of them. She usually limited it to about two or three.
The easy part of this assignment was going to be controlling the knives. Amelia was a very precise individual, both with her words and with her magic, and getting a few knives to go where she wanted them to go was not very difficult at all. The real difficulty would be splitting her concentration between all

Otherworlde PSI 202: Do you even lift?
Amelia had completed her assignments for PSI 201, but she still had all three assignments to go in PSI 202, and she certainly did not want to miss them or skip over any of them. She knew about telepathy now, but she also had to advance her telekinetic abilities. Amelia liked being able to use telekinesis. It was a very convenient form of magic, and so far, the only form of psionics that she could easily use in combat. She supposed that she could have taken that class on combat psionics this term, but the fact that she was simultaneously a student in two different departments meant that she was progressing very slowly, and besides, she wanted to have a good grasp of the basics of psionics like telekinesis and telepathy before she started learning anything else. Her control over her psionic magic was incredibly precise, much like the high level of control that she could exert over her natural electricity magic, but she always ran into one problem with her telekinesis: her general lack of

Otherworlde PSI 201: Connection Complete
Amelia had successfully completed her first and second assignments in her PSI 201 class. She had already passed the class, but that was not enough for her. If she really wanted to understand all the ins and outs of telepathy, which she thought would certainly be a useful branch of Psionics, she would need to complete the third assignment as well. She had learned how to broadcast images to a mind, and she had done so successfully at three different ranges. Now, she would need to learn how to receive those images as well. Professor Eden had not specified whether or not she would still need a physical piece of her target to establish that kind of connection, but it seemed like he had implied it, so she was still going to use Cressida for this final assignment. Besides, Professor Eden had warned his students about the very likely possibility of receiving violent or pornographic thoughts, and she figured that Cressida was a safe bet. She knew very well that the latter kind of thoughts were

Otherworlde PSI 201: Connection Established
Now that Amelia had collected a physical piece of Cressida – specifically, her blood – as a way to establish a telepathic connection with her for her PSI 201 assignments, she could start actually trying to produce that connection and send her ‘mother’ some simple telepathic messages. Professor Eden had said that eventually, Amelia would not need to have a physical part of her telepathic target to form a connection, but that some sort of conduit would still need to be there. Maybe Amelia would not have to go around collecting other people’s blood after all. Then again, it did seem very convenient to do so.
Amelia did not know how long-range the connection would be. Maybe she would have to be right there, next to her target, the first time she tried to establish a telepathic communication. Or maybe, on the other extreme, there was no limit to the distance at all, and as long as she had a physical object with which to establish a conduit, they could be on ent

Amelia was glad to be advancing in the Psionics department. She had, initially, never planned to do anything like psionic magic when she first started trying to decide what classes she would take at Otherworlde Academy – in addition to Medical Studies, she had wanted to study Herbalism, back during the very brief period of time that it had been available at the academy. She had wanted to see if she was capable of using the same kind of plant-manipulation magic as her creator, Cressida, even if it was a learned ability rather than an innate one. But now, she doubted that she would go back to such a thing even if the Herbalism classes were ever offered again. She was walking her own path now. She was not following in the footsteps of her ‘mother’ any longer.
Even so, she was glad that Cressida was always there to help her. It meant that she would always have someone to use as a partner in assignments, or even as a test subject if the assignment was harmless enough. It m

OW Tournament: Schrecken vs. Boomer
There was only one round remaining. Schrecken only had one more opponent in the tournament. And, much to his joy, it was someone else he had never encountered before. According to the new tournament announcement, the student that he would be fighting was named Boomer. Schrecken had never heard of a student by the name of Boomer, but he immediately assumed that Boomer would have some kind of explosive magic. Why else would someone have a name like that? Why would someone be called Boomer unless they had the ability to make things go boom? It made perfect sense to Schrecken, anyway. As such, he started coming up with a plan – of his usual nonsensical, barely-even-a-plan type. It was more fun this way, after all. And besides, he would find out sooner or later if this student named Boomer really did make things go boom.
Schrecken supposed that if he was going to tell his ‘plan’ to anyone, it might as well be the tree that he was still growing from his Magical Linguistics

The Beast Studies building was certainly decorated for Halloween, with giant pumpkins, spiderwebs that were almost certainly created by real spiders, and the occasional bubbling cauldron or flask of mysterious, sinister-looking liquid set up in the corner of a classroom (though at least one of these was actually just a large batch of healing potions that Cressida had forgotten to move before the students came in). The witch herself was nowhere to be found, initially, even as the students took their places in their seats.

Then, from outside the room, the students could hear the faintest sound of breaking glass as fog streamed through the doors -- and they had no more time to wonder about it before they heard a long, haunting, high-pitched wail.

Cressida made her way through the doors and to the front of the classroom, wearing a costume that almost certainly had required the use of temporary transformation potions. She was wearing a simple white dress and a gray cloak instead of her usual attire, and her hair was red instead of its usual pale blonde. She had a ghostly, fey-like appearance that indicated that she was no longer an ordinary human witch, but something entirely different.

"Happy Halloween, everyone. I hope you don't mind that I've temporarily changed my own species for this," Cressida stated. Her speaking voice was, at least, exactly the same as it always sounded. "Perhaps you'll get to do the same when I finally get the chance to restructure the Beast Studies classes. There have been some... complications." Her expression grew dark and grim for a few moments, indicating that those 'complications' were probably a bit more serious than just being her over-the-top attempt at putting together a costume. "Anyways!" Cressida clapped her hands together once, loudly. "As you can see, I'm a banshee right now, though by the end of all the lectures, you'll probably see the effect wear off and you can watch me go right back to being a human. Don't worry, no one here is actually going to die, not as long as I can help it. I'm not a harbinger of doom, I'm a harbinger of education." She grinned, tilting her head thoughtfully. "Of course, this is Otherworlde, so you'll have to be careful. Now, shall we begin?"

“The intersection of the magical world with the mundane world is really quite interesting,” Cressida began, “and nowhere is that intersection clearer than with sightings of cryptids. A cryptid is some sort of animal, or occasionally other form of life, that is generally hidden from the rest of the non-magical world, while still being present within it. Of course, you can often find cryptids in magical regions, as well, and perhaps some of you actually are cryptids.” That would certainly be interesting, Cressida decided. “There are all sorts of cryptids of all different types,” the witch explained. “One of my particular favorites is the Mongolian Death Worm. Look it up!”
The witch smiled at her students. This was an introductory class, after all, and so hopefully it wouldn’t be too difficult for people to pass.
“So, what you’re going to do for this assignment,” she continued, “

The creatures in the image seemed to move with a life of their own.
“Before you go about trying to produce new creatures – which, as this is a dark arts academy, I completely expect you to do once you start getting into the upper-level classes and possibly also taking some Medical Studies classes -- you’re going to need to do some research on existing ones. Either they come from those organs, or they consume them, or they have powers associated with them, or they simply happen to have them in some form that’s different from what a normal human’s got.
