OW Tournament: Schrecken vs. Apple Redux, Part 2
Schrecken showed up early, ready to go. He had decided to leave Zombie Joe back at the dorm, as he doubted that even a very strong wrestler zombie would be able to fight very well against a tree. He had plenty of techniques he could use that did not involve zombies, both from Necromancy and Magical Linguistics. Of course, he would probably have a lot more abilities if he actually bothered to pass his classes all the time instead of getting bored or distracted and going off to do something else, but it was still clear that he had grown stronger since the last time he fought Apple.
Apple, however, was nowhere to be found. “Hey!” Schrecken called out, looking wildly around at the audience. “Hey! Hey! Apple! Where are you, Apple? I think we are going to have to have the big fight soon! I want to talk to you before we have the big fight! I want to tell you about Batman! There is a cool plant lady who fights Batman and she looks like you grown up! Hoo hoo hoo! Hello?

OW Tournament: Schrecken vs. Apple Redux, Part 1
It was time for the tournament at Otherworlde Academy again, and Schrecken, as usual, had signed up. He was rather confident about the tournament this time. Sure, the first time he had entered the tournament, he had not won a single battle and eventually got disqualified for… not working hard enough or something like that, but the second time he had entered, he had won! Maybe this time he could win again, or at least place pretty high in the rankings. He knew that there were some pretty strong students in the tournament this time around, like Samhain, but even if he failed to win, he thought it would still be fun.
Schrecken still remembered all of his battles from the previous tournament. First, he had fought Cordelia, a witch who was initially, in his mind, most notable for owning an umbrella that shot fire out of it, which he thought was impossibly cool. His plan for that battle, like most battles he had fought, basically amounted to ‘don’t get hit’, but he ha

Schrecken had been given a magic seed by Selene, which would grow into a plant that would produce magic-enhancing sap. Schrecken actually did quite a good job taking care of it, watering it and letting it get sunlight and keeping it at the right temperature. The plant grew and grew, perhaps a bit unusually gnarled for a honey magic sycamore tree, but it grew nevertheless.
And it remembered. Magic grew and was nurtured in its roots, and it knew where that magic had originated. The interactions between magician and source of magic were innumerable, undefinable, and above all, inextricably linked. The plant remembered.
This is what it remembered from the first few days of its growth.
Day 1: “Hoo hoo hoo! You are just a little tiny baby seed! But you are going to grow into a big tree! I will tell you a lot of magic things so you will have lots and lots and lots of magic! Let’s see… Hoo hoo! I know! I will tell you about my scythe! It is a big black scythe with yell

Otherworlde LIN 302: An Influx of Magic
Schrecken was excited about his class on regenerative magic seals. He knew about draining energy from living things already, to some extent, thanks to his experience in the Necromancy department, but he had never done any kind of energy-draining magic with paper before. He wandered out into the forest, papyrus notebook, tape and pencil in hand, ready to stick the paper on a living thing. A tree would be as good as anything else for this assignment, right? That was technically alive, and a big tree had probably been alive for a long enough time that it had a ton of energy to drain without killing it.
Schrecken scribbled the word that he had been taught – an Elvish term for ‘to drain’ – onto a piece of papyrus in the notebook, tore it out, and taped it to the largest tree in the area that he could find. The papyrus began to glow, the word on it glowing more brightly than the rest, as the tree, the grass around it, and even an unwary squirrel started to be drained

Otherworlde PSI 101: Everything Comes Together
Amelia had completed her first two assignments for PSI 101, or The Art of Meditation. This was enough for her to pass her class already, but there was no way that Amelia was going to just consider that good enough and ignore the third assignment that she was also given. This class was essentially the foundation of all of Psionics. Without the ability to effectively meditate, one could be severely damaged by their own use of psionic magic, or just simply be unable to effectively utilize psionic magic at all. She had to do everything, even if it took a lot more work.
Amelia had already practiced calming her mind and meditating in a relaxed state in a suitable location. It had been the Alternate Room, and she had run into her reflection there, but it had actually worked quite well for her purposes. And she had chosen a meditative phrase – part of the Fibonacci sequence, because math was something you could always count on no matter how hectic and heated everything around you became

Amelia had completed her first assignment in PSI 101, which had only been complicated by the arrival of her slightly disturbing reflection in the Alternate Room. Now, she only had two more to go, and they did not seem like they would be too difficult. At the very least, they certainly would not involve a doppelganger showing up seemingly out of nowhere and seemingly cheerfully offering to murder the few friends Amelia even had. For now, Amelia just had to develop a meditative phrase that she could use to focus her mind in a state of peace even in stressful situations, like combat.
Professor Eden had suggested a name, or a peaceful memory, something that other people were unlikely to use but which would be instantly familiar for Amelia herself. But what could Amelia fall back on for serenity? She hadn’t even been around that long. She didn’t really have any exceptionally peaceful memories or associations she could make. Her entire life had been spent at Otherworlde Academy,

It was probably a bit odd for someone to take PSI 102 and 103 and then go back later to actually learn how to meditate in PSI 101, but Amelia was taking classes in two different departments at once, and she had to fit classes in where she could. Thanks to her previous classes, she had experience with meditation before, so she did not expect the assignments in this class to be too difficult. Especially not the first one, where all she had to do was relax in a quiet place for about an hour in order to prepare for meditation. It was something she had already done, albeit not for as long. And she knew the place she would go to meditate.
She would go to the Alternate Room.
Cressida had warned her many, many times about going to the Alternate Room and about what kind of trouble one could get into there, but Amelia had meditated there with Kuzma and she had been fine. She had not even met her own reflection, or anyone else’s reflection, for that matter. It had not been dangerous, and sh

Otherworlde MDC 202: Defibri-melia
Amelia had completed both of the MDC 202 assignments that were required for her to pass the class, but she certainly was not about to skip the third one. She did not want to leave any gaps in her knowledge, and besides, she wanted to impress Professor Katja before it was time for the eccentric Medical Studies teacher to depart from Otherworlde Academy and be replaced by Raphael. For her final assignment, Amelia had to, once again, perform some kind of medical treatment on one of the many lifelike mannequins in the Medical Studies classrooms. But this time, instead of relying on makeshift implements or herbal remedies, Amelia had to use one of her own innate powers for the purpose of medicine. Professor Katja had listed examples such as the anticoagulants and enzymes of vampire saliva, healing and revival abilities of various creatures, and especially hard fingernails that could be used to dig out embedded foreign material from a wound.
Amelia had none of that, however. Since she did no

Otherworlde MDC 202: Survival Sutures
Amelia had completed her first assignment in MDC 202, but she still had two more to go, and this second one would certainly be far more difficult than the first, especially as it had quite a time limit attached to it. Professor Katja had just injured one of the Medical Studies mannequins, and it was up to Amelia to close up the wound that her teacher had inflicted… using only makeshift field supplies from Katja’s cupboard of last-ditch-effort medical implements. Amelia was learning a survival skill, essentially – both for her and for any potential patients she encountered out in the field where there was no way to access contemporary medicine or standard medical tools. The wound that Katja had inflicted was a deep cut in the back of the mannequin’s calf, almost like the wound that Amelia had inflicted on Geoffrey a few weeks ago to demonstrate the kind of wounds that would require different levels of anesthesia. Perhaps the professor was referencing the incident

Amelia had completed the assignments in one of her Medical Studies classes, and now she had one more set of assignments to go. This time, her assignments were in MDC 202, or Field Medicine. The first thing she had to do was treat an injury without using conventional medical supplies, instead relying on unorthodox ones. Professor Katja – would these assignments mark the last time Amelia saw her? – had said that Amelia could injure herself, another student, or one of the mannequins in the building. Amelia couldn’t really injure herself for this kind of assignment, given what sort of creature she was. She had attacked people for the sake of an assignment before – well, one time, that had been demonstrating wounds on Geoffrey, who she still thought was a new student – but in this case, Katja had not said that their wounds would automatically heal after a set period of time or that they were guaranteed not to be fatal. Amelia had gravely injured Geoffrey in mul

Amelia only had one more assignment to go in MDC 201, her Intermediate Medicine class. She had already used an anesthetic on someone that worked like a mosquito bite, inflicting an injury without her test subject feeling the wound until it was too late. That test subject had been Geoffrey, a demon who had been hanging around the Beast Studies building. As far as Amelia knew, he was just a new student looking to see whether or not he might want to enroll in the Beast Studies department. She had no idea what his true intentions were or where he really came from. She had encountered him again a second time for her second assignment in the class, where she had to inflict various injuries on someone to illustrate the kind of wounds that would need different degrees of anesthesia. Geoffrey had ended up with deep cuts in his forehead and leg, his other leg was broken and he suffered severe electrical burns by the time Amelia was done with him. He had blacked out from it all eventually, but if

Amelia was quite fascinated by the fact that, for her next MDC 201 assignment, Professor Katja – or perhaps the phantasm residing in her department – had granted Amelia the ability to inflict severe and potentially fatal injuries on people without actually adversely affecting them. Apparently, whatever injuries she inflicted on someone would heal at the end of the week, as long as she still had the ability and was using it to complete her assignment. For the assignment, Amelia needed to inflict severe internal injuries on either herself or someone else and determine the level of anesthesia that would be necessary to use on the patient in order to begin treatment if one were to not use magic. Just like with her previous assignment, doing it on herself was out of the question. She may have had a few internal similarities to a human, but she was generally hard to injure physically thanks to her metallic body. Besides, it would be much easier and more informative to inflict inj

Otherworlde MDC 201: Metal Mosquito
Amelia was quite fascinated by Professor Katja’s description of mosquitoes and the way they were able to injure people and even drain their blood without being noticed or even felt by the person they bit. Amelia knew about mosquitoes already, in a general sense. No mosquito had ever tried to bite her before, of course. Regardless of whether or not Otherworlde Academy, with all its ice and fog, was too cold for mosquitoes to inhabit, or whether or not mosquitoes even wanted what she had for blood, Amelia was made of metal anyway. She had blood – or, at least, a blood-like potion flowing through her body that was partially made from actual blood – but there was no way a mosquito was going to get any of it from her.
But to hear Professor Katja talk about the way that people could learn from mosquitoes and the way that the principles of their bites could be applied to Medical Studies was really quite fascinating to Amelia. She was glad she had chosen this department. She

As usual, the Beast Studies building was covered in plants both on the inside and outside, though they seemed to be a bit more... hostile than usual. Thick, twisting vines barred doors that students were not supposed to open, sinister-looking flowers seemed to turn to face students passing by as though they had eyes of their own, and even outside the building roots seemed to move of their own accord. Cressida was clearly on edge about something, though exactly what that was certainly wasn't clear. Was it just because of Geoffrey, the demon she had fused with a plant to rob him of his powers, and the fact that he was still hanging around the campus plotting his revenge? Was it because Cressida's 'daughter', the robotic witch known as Amelia, was off on her own now and Cressida was worried? Or was there something else entirely, something more serious?

Regardless of what it was, Cressida's mood didn't seem darker or more stern than usual. Of course, Cressida being who she was, she certainly didn't seem less stern either.

"Welcome to Beast Studies, everyone," the witch stated simply, her intense gaze sweeping across the class as she observed each of her students in turn. "Regardless of whether you're a new student entering this department for the first time, an experienced student advancing up the ranks, or someone who thought they could get away with laziness and failed their assignments the last time, I assure you that you have quite a lot to learn here. It will certainly be worth your while. You'll be able to encounter, research and study many different magical species in this department, and you'll eventually be able to keep some of them as companions and familiars. Eventually, at the Expert level of Beast Studies, you will be able to channel the powers of gods, add new abilities to your own innate powers, shapeshift and skinwalk, and breed unique magical creatures. This department may seem more academic than most, but don't underestimate it. This isn't just magic, it's a science. Now, without further ado, here are your assignments. Don't disappoint me."

“The intersection of the magical world with the mundane world is really quite interesting,” Cressida began, “and nowhere is that intersection clearer than with sightings of cryptids. A cryptid is some sort of animal, or occasionally other form of life, that is generally hidden from the rest of the non-magical world, while still being present within it. Of course, you can often find cryptids in magical regions, as well, and perhaps some of you actually are cryptids.” That would certainly be interesting, Cressida decided. “There are all sorts of cryptids of all different types,” the witch explained. “One of my particular favorites is the Mongolian Death Worm. Look it up!”
The witch smiled at her students. This was an introductory class, after all, and so hopefully it wouldn’t be too difficult for people to pass.
“So, what you’re going to do for this assignment,” she continued, “

The creatures in the image seemed to move with a life of their own.
“Before you go about trying to produce new creatures – which, as this is a dark arts academy, I completely expect you to do once you start getting into the upper-level classes and possibly also taking some Medical Studies classes -- you’re going to need to do some research on existing ones. None of them are.”

The witch unrolled an anatomical diagram of the human body, one of the kind that showcases the muscles and internal organs of a person. “Now, many creatures are associated with certain parts of the body. Either they come from those organs, or they consume them, or they have powers associated with them, or they simply happen to have them in some form that’s different from what a normal human’s got. As a Potionmaker, these sorts of things are very interesting to me.”

And yes, I created the golem myself. I have a rather… reactive form of magic.” The griffin stayed in place, but the golem tried to wander off and had to be stopped by Cressida’s plants. “You can find water creatures in even the most remotely magical body of water, suc
