Imagine you're playing a video game. The controls aren't explained very well, and anybody who's ever tried to explain it to you can only do so from hearsay, based on whatever input they'd gathered from the people who told them how to play.
At first, it seems straightforward enough. You know how to move around, you figure out how to keep your energy bar filled, and the graphics are pretty nice. Sounds great too. But you spend a few million in-game years doing pretty much nothing but exploring around, and then you start to ask yourself things like, "Am I doing it right? What am I supposed to be doing? What's my score?"
So you poke around the controls. What was it so-and-so said to do? No, that didn't work... or, did it? How do I know it worked? Maybe, let's try something else... no, that didn't do anything.
