Maze Runner - Griever Concept Art by KENBARTHELMEY Maze Runner - Griever Concept Art by KENBARTHELMEY
My first Griever Test Design I did for the ''Maze Runner'' film. (All painted)

Slugs and coconut crabs were a huge influence for me in finding the overall body shape. The head was a bit tricky, since in the book they have no face, only a big ugly mouth. It's basically a mixture of caterpillars, bulldogs and even piranhas.

Wow it's so cool that you're the one who designed the Griever. Really impressive design, and I love how it has some elements of your other works.
I'm glad you designed it this way, most art i've seen for the Griever looks like something out of Monsters Inc.

hello snapping turtle comics here I'm looking for creative talents for a crowd funding project im doing. Im doing a table-top art book, that will promote my new comic shop, as well as give exposure to the artists within with custom pieces and interviews to go with the art.... if you are interested in participating, please let me know. There are a number of artists involved already but, I'm still looking to expand the book. as an incentive all artists involved in the publishing of this book will receive a copy upon its success. as well as recognition by many artists, publishers and fans. if your interested or wish to know more please message me.

Holy crap this is so incredibly AMAZING!  I'm hoping to be concept artist at some point and I really hope I can end up being as good as this!  I haven't seen the Maze Runner yet but I really plan to, and I was really curious and excited to see what the Grievers were going to look like! I think it looks phenomenal!

Impressive, very nice work. Was surprised to find out how much of a difference there was between the description of the Grievers in the book vs the Grievers in the movie.

Saw the movie a few weeks ago and then just finished reading the books last week.

Thanks! Actually I used almost all descriptions from the book. They are described as big bulbous, green slug-like things with mechanical appendages, without a face but a big ugly mouth... They needed to look scary and dangerous in the film so there were a few things that needed to be modified.

I always thought of the Greivers being more like a roly poly, than having articulating limbs. The book made it sound like their means of motion was to roll up into something similar to a roly poly, and then the mechanical appendages pierced their skin and would push off the ground, causing them to roll forward, instead of walking on legs.
