Good Souls by KelpGull Good Souls by KelpGull
For several minutes a young priest had been listening to the comments of the women and the pronouncements of the protonotary. His face was severe, his forehead broad, and his eyes penetrating. He pushed his way silently through the crowd, examined the "little sorcerer," and stretched his hand over him. It was time, for all the pious ladies were already licking their lips in anticipation of the fine flaming faggot.
"I'll adopt that child," said the priest.
He wrapped it in his cassock and carried it away. The bystanders looked after him with horror.

The above excerpt is from the classic Victor Hugo title 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame,' the chapter being "Good Souls," and thus the title ;P
The original scene depicting Quasimodo's adoption was much kinder to Frollo's character than Disney's rendition.

For :icondisney-club:'s "Villains Gone Good" contest.
Frollo was the only Disney villain I found one hundred percent despicable as a youngin', and upon reading the book, was the character I found most likable and sympathetic, even if he was a bit intense. So it seemed appropriate :D

This is wonderful. I know it's probably been a while since you've read the novel, but I know there's a whole heap of us out here who'd love some re-imagined scenes from here and there Victor Hugo's work! All is very Disney-Frollo, which I suppose is understandable, but it's nice to see things based on the novel instead. Favoriting!

Thanks so much! (sorry for the late reply)
I really enjoyed adapting disney's character design to the tone of the novel. Perhaps I will do more scenes in the future :D

Claude Frollo was apparently 36 years old in the novel and had adopted Quasimodo nearly 20 years ago. So he was about 17 in this drawing? I may be wrong.
In the novel he was a man who was isolated through the constant study of alchemy and warding off his dissolute younger brother. Esmeralda set off long suppressed feelings within him where he systematically made poor life choices. He should have focused on being a better parent to little Quasimodo!

I'm not sure of the exact ages in the book (it's been a minute since I read it), but they made him look much older in the movie, so I adjusted his age based on the movie version of him :)
Haha, yes, very poor life choices... It was quite a tragic series of events he initiated.

Indeed.  He may have been a sex-starved man of the church, but he's a lot nicer and more human in the original novel.  Heck, Jehan Frollo, his little brother, wasn't even mentioned.

As much as I adore how Disney adapted Frollo, nothing beats the Frollo in Hugo's novel. His complex character always leaves me wanting to hug him and slap him at the same time. This is one of my favorite scenes in the book and you've captured it beautifully. :D

I really love the fact that you used an aspect from the original source material. It makes this villain gone good seem more believe and interesting to see.

I love this! The way the light just falls on Frollo and not the others, and the way little Quasi is clutching at his shirt, and the shocked faces of the women behind them--it's perfect!

aww.
When I saw the movie in the stream, I just felt bad for him. He focused so much on staying away from sin that he didn't seem to understand things, and he ended up sinning more by trying to be pure. It seems like a mistake anyone could do. I guess Catholics would probably be more likely to fall into that, though, since they have a lot of rituals. I think...
How exactly did things go in the book? It's nice that he seems nicer than in the movie.
Also, it's a nice picture. ^_^

Yes, he was a bit nicer. He took in Quasimodo when everyone else was calling for the child to be burned, and raised him as well as he could. He went a bit crazy in the end though. It's a good book, but very depressing.
