chasing dreams

Wed Nov 11, 2015, 7:49 AM by kelogsloops:iconkelogsloops:

Hi. I'd like to finally, properly introduce myself.

Below is a video that took me a long time to finally muster the courage finally share. I've been working on shaping this YouTube channel to be a creative space for me to share and talk art and share any resources (tips/tutorials) that might help other aspiring artists out there.

It's a video to introduce who I am, but more importantly, it's about where I am, what I'm doing and where I want to go.

So, up until two months ago, I was studying Physiotherapy at university, and I really did enjoy it. But my heart just wasn’t in it.
I never intended to study and pursue art, coming from a school environment where it’s about “having a real job", like a doctor or a lawyer. The general advice from adults and even my own relatives, was that anything creative was just better off as a hobby. So I decided to keep it on the side while studying for a "real job", and I feel like this is a story that resonates with so many of us.

I drudged on studying Physio, to a point where each day that I continued the course, it ate away at my confidence in my passion. Art became a second priority, and before I knew it, it became something I did only when I had ‘spare time', and that was rare while studying such an intense course. At that point, I started questioning everything, and I realized that I was in no way happy with where I was going and what I was sacrificing.

After months of tossing and turning, I decided; screw it - I took that leap of faith. I left my course and applied to transfer to study Animation and commit everyday to pursuing my passion and doing everything I've always wanted to do. I’m going to do it and I’m going to give it my everything. I’m going to work my ass off for it, so that at the end of each day, I'll know I tried. I'll do it without having a single shred of security and certainty about what’s going to happen.

Screw waking up one day to know you shut down your dreams because they’re not “real”.
Screw having regrets of “never having tried".
Screw it, I’m doing it.

Ahhhhh. The journal that resonates with my current dilemma! Honestly, I'm so glad to have found your pieces of work. Sometimes I look at dA profiles and there are some AMAZING works. But then I see that the artists are hobbyists or self taught. Those encounters just had me thinking, "Then do I really need a major in Arts if i can just be self taught?". Basically I went onto this whole spiral of what can be self taught and what cannot. I questioned the value of art which is in itself a big mistake. At first I thought I could do architecture because it deals with art and has a sort of "real job" to it. But I only wanted to do that because I wanted to help build a house for my mother, and my mother only. Buildings in general did not fascinate me as much. Then I pondered on majoring in Business because hey, I can be an entrepreneur that has to do with art. Business being my major and Art and PSY being my minors. But the thought of grueling in business when I don't even like it troubled me. So i revised my plan again and went, screw it! I'll get a degree in B.F.A. Being an undeclared freshman in college, I told this to my grade advisor before consulting my parents & we basically made a plan of all the courses I'd need to get into my schools B.F.A program. I later told my mother that I didn't want to be an architect, but she didn't react negatively (she really didn't react at all). I was still worried about my decision, and then I told my brother about my decision and my worries, he told be that a degree in any kind of form is an act of accomplishment; that you stuck to a decision and went through with it for four years & that in itself is amazing. So yeah, it was refreshing to hear your story. Thank you so much & keep up the big work!

Crazy. I think we are on the exact same journey, except you are figuring it out while still in school and I actually went the "stable career" route for 5 years after college before running off with my savings to do this art thing. Good luck to ya mate!

The thing is, it's only thanks to people like yourself, that I even have the courage to take this path.
It's because of the stories of people who gave their everything and went against "society's expectations". You hear so much negativity like "don't do it", but there's the pockets of people who  say "I did it, and I still do it".

I'm glad to have been any sort of inspiration to you. You have a lot of skill, so I am sure that if you keep putting your work out there and creating that you will be successful.
If you need more encouragement, Will Terry and Jake Parker have some great videos with advice for people freelancing or trying to turn art into a stable carrer. Here are just a couple of videos from them on topics that might interest you: 10 reasons you will not starve as an artist and Achieving Your Goals.
Art can definitely be a viable career, so don't be intimidated by the unknown. I totally understand how scary it is putting yourself out there and doing something unconventional with your career, but you can do it. :)

rather late, but its a little inspirational reading your journal and seeing your face for the first time. Your artwork is beautiful and pursuing an art career will only improve your skills to the next level, I can't wait to see how your stuff evolves over the next couple of years and I'm super happy for you!

When I saw this I just HAD to comment, and I wanted to say, well done man, well done.
Usually people don't follow their dreams, and for the few that do, they're usually twice your age when they finally find the courage to do it. So for you to reach that point at such a young age, and take the necessary actions to fulfill it, you've definitely inspired me. :)

I get how others around you might not completely understand, but it's your life, and you're the one that would have to live it, not them. Even if the career you want doesn't lead to fame and riches, it doesn't matter, because ultimately you'll still be happy with it, and all you really need is to make enough to live on (and possibly a future family if you choose). So I hope it all turns out well for you, and I hope now people on DA won't continue to think that you're a girl, even though I think it's pretty cool that you're friends offline with at least one cute girl. ;)

Honestly, thanks so much pal! It's scary, and that's for sure, but man it's all been so worth it thus far.

EXACTLY! That's exactly the attitude and mentality behind it. If I can live with just enough, but do what I love, then what more could I ask for!

To be honest... I still get mistaken for being a girl quite often hahahahhaa.
HAHAHA HEYYYY~~ Ivy I think you've got an admirer haha. ;)

Oh i'm sure you'll make plenty of money, and have a lot left over for anything extra that might come up. :)

Haha, i'm sure you like them mistaking you for a girl sometimes since girls around here seem to get way more watchers than the guys do, lol. ;P

Really? If that's the case, WOOHOO! I never really thought of gender as being a thing here on dA though, now that I think about it, I don't really know the genders of most of the artists I look at haha.

Haha well maybe that's for the better that you DON'T know, because it's shocking how many guys here like pretending to be girls just to get attention from other guys O_O

Anyways you're still a talented artist regardless of gender, so just keep it up, and you'll get plenty more watchers and favs xD

Thank you so much! It's definitely a daunting, scary and terrifyingly lonely path in a way, but it's a path that I feel "right" on, I feel like it's a decision that I've always knew I needed to make. So to be able to now say that I'm on that path, it's the world to me. I really am happy, and I really do hope that maybe one day I can look back and really say that this was the right choice :)

Oh man, I've been wanting to make my own YouTube channel forever too, as a teen it started out wanting to make videos about art, fashion and such, but as I evolve I'm finding out that all I really want to do is to share my journey and myself with everyone, and let it be an outlet for not being afraid to show myself to the world anymore, taking chances because life is this. This is it.

Sharing mindfulness and healing forces around, that's my dream together with making goods with meaningful art pieces on them!
You inspire me, thanks for being brave and awesome

You should! YouTube has become such a huge platform for sharing not only content specific to fields like film, music etc, but it's so big for sharing stories and voicing thoughts and personal things. It's a platform where you can do just what you want, 'art and fashion,' and 'your journey'!
This is our time. This is your time, and like you said, this is it. Give it a go, give it a shot and don't look back. Know you tried, and be happy with wherever it takes you, because you KNOW you gave it a shot.

I should be the one thanking you, because it's people like you that make me feel like what I do is worth it, and that if I'm able to at least connect to and reach out to a single person out there, then everything I have done and am doing is worth it.

Thanks so much for your words of encouragement dear, I agree with you, and I totally know that it's super worth it, this is life and no risk is too big, it's not taking any risks that kills us. Life can be anything we make of it. I'm going to be doing it, I just don't feel completely ready yet however I know and trust that it'll come around sooner than later :)

I'm glad I can inspire you too! You're a great guy, I'm always looking forward to what you do and happy to see that you're tackling your dreams. Respect!

Hey kelogs, as a long time follower to your art, congratulations! Won't tell you whether you made the right choice or the wrong choice, that depends on where and how hard you work from here, but you definitely have the talent and the skill to make this work out! Looking forward to more great works from you in the future and thanks for everything you've released that's inspired my own art too :)

Hey hey! Aw, thanks so much! (Really happy to hear that you're a long time follower! Thanks for sticking around with me for such a long time, really!)

I know I can't really say whether it's right or wrong, but I won't ever know unless I try right? That's why I'll work hard from here, so that in a years time, and every year after that, I can look back and really say whether it was right or wrong. That way, I can at least say I've tried.

Thanks for supporting me pal, I'm really glad that I've been able to inspire you, and hope I don't let you down !

SO...where to begin??I completely understand your fear of ending with *no real job* because  arts is a very difficult thing to live off and it may not lead you anywhere but my parents also told me:*Choose something where you have tons of options, where you can choose from.Something may even lead somehow to art.*
And yes,art could end up,eventually, being just an hobby but who knows? maybe one day i will be offered an oppurtonity and i will make something of it.And i admire your guts.Because at least you tried! ( i tried but it didnt work for me while in school but i will definitly see what i can do when in University).So...pretty much having the same problem here. But all i can tell you is :D  DO IT!Because i believe you can.All the support coming for Portugal, this way!And in a more happy note i already had a friend of mine stalking your work and she loves it...And i thought you were a she back then...IM SO SORRY.When i saw the video i was like :Oh,okay!so thats Kelogsloops.(then it changes to you) okay now she is trooling us XD ! *:So...this is Kelogsloops! ...And its a boy*...my face was like... O.O WHUT??? XD im so sorry and by the way you just won a new subscriber on Youtube. No pressure because i believe in you !=3
