Fire Prodigy _ Azula by kelly1412 Fire Prodigy _ Azula by kelly1412
dear dear, mom miss you~. Q 3Q

Just realized that I haven't draw her for a while~~ so last doodle before 7 July.
compare with Korra's character design, and look back, the last generation characters are actually very young and cute > 3<
looking forward for her active in "The search“

I saw an character analysis of Azula today and really want to share with you.
It's clear, objective and deep.
Everything just what I wanted to say but don’t know how to describe.

originally post on tumblr by Elphie [link]

It kind of bothers me when I see people describing Azula as “pure evil.”

No. She is not “pure evil.”

For on thing “pure evil” does not exist.

For another, Azula was manipulated from the time of her birth to believe a certain way. She was taught to see others as inferior, and to see the inferior as inherantly weak. She was taught to use her clever mind for war strategies and manipulations, she was taught that her firebending powers were for exerting dominance and force. She was taught that love and emotions were weaknesses, and they must be snuffed out or there would be consequences. She was taught that trust was for fools, and fear was the only reliable way.

She was raised to be a weapon, not a daughter, probably from the moment she first showed any firebending ability. Since Azula was a natural prodigy, this was likely from a very early age.

In short, her entire belief system was instilled in her by her father and her upbringing. Her entire world came crashing down the moment that system failed her. After that Azula shows very palpable emotions- fear/paranoia, sadness, shame, self-loathing. She even shows an awareness of love during her hallucination…it’s entirely subconscious, but the fact that hallucinated Ursa admitted that she loved Azula shows that deep down Azula knows what love is, and she knows that her mother did love her, despite the neglect. And yes Ursa did neglect Azula’s emotional needs. That’s the difference between her and Zuko- Zuko very clearly felt and experienced his mother’s love. Azula did not, because Ursa favored Zuko heavily. Even so, I do believe Ursa loved her daughter in some way.

Anyways. None of those things add up to someone being “pure evil.” That’s a lot of grey area there and I do believe Azula is capable of treating her illness. And anyone’s worldview can be changed. After all, Zuko’s was. And Zuko could have easily slipped down a similar path that Azua did. Those two were very much alike.

And no, I’m not saying that Azula didn’t do horrible things. She is a villain, after all. But she’s not “pure evil.”

Because no one is.

these are also my girl~

For sure. Azula was not pure evil. But she was... evil.
Honestly, other than her being younger and prettier, she really was no better nor no worse than her father.
Both grew up as the second born, watching their softy older brothers fail at inheriting the throne and waiting for their chance.
They both had those ideologies instilled in them from a young age and treated their family and friends as mere tools.
As a kid, I used to hate her so much, and thought the only reason everyone kept saying there was good in her was because she was a charismatic, young, strong female. Like, the mistook respect for actual sympathy (didn't help the way she treated Zuko). That said, she was like my third or fourth favorite character growing up simply because she made such a good rival for Zuko.
Now that I'm older... my view of her hasn't changed but I do appreciate her character a lot more. Probably the best villain of the original series. I do like the idea of her and Zuko sorting out their differences but... I hope it's done in a way where it's very believable how sorry she is.

Pure evil? Pssh. If there was no pure evil, then how would we have Vlad Dracul, a.k.a. the infamous Dracula?
GeorgianBush Featured By Owner Sep 28, 2015
Dracula wasn't evil, actually (If we are talking about wallachian voivode )

You know, it kinda reminds me of this quote I heard from someone (I don't remember who that person was):
"Evil are always been 'made', they were never been 'born'. Some 'people' can be saved, some of 'them' were irredeemable. And there are others willing to commit evil, but there are some... forced to do so." :|

And it's also bothers me that many of the happy A:TLA fan arts in DA always and only depict the Team Avatar and both Zuko and Mai as a lovely, happy couple. As if they, especially Zuko, forget or did not thought about one particular person.

What also really bothers (or angers) me is that much of the Azula fan arts in DA always depict her as a "villain", "a person with villainous attention", "psychopathic villain", "the villain deserves it (well, in a jail and chained)" and etc.

But very few of them depict Azula as a "tragic character who deserves pity", "redeemer", "no evil intention" or "happy family time". :iconwthplz:

I just don't understand with most of these artists in DA. Are they really lack the empathy or are they really just plain hypocrites? :iconhmmphplz:

P.S: My job is starting to take a significant toll on my visit in DA, that's why I didn't show myself very often in your fan art. I hope you don't mad at me. ^^;

Love the jump attack. :D Another beautiful rendition of your favorite Fire lady!
fireonthewind Featured By Owner Jul 5, 2012
Love the pic and I agree with your assessment. I've never seen her as pure evil. Emotionally abused, emotionally fragile, neglected (no one was there for her really) and definitely going down the wrong path, but not evil.

azula still has the charm and grace. =) she might appear "evil" but there were reasons to her behaving in a way that might make her seem like "pure evil." she has a very complex character even more so in the end.

Word of Bryan: there are people in the Avatar world who are truly evil, but Azula is not.

Word of Mike: Azula has a soft side though it's buried very deeply.

So from what I understand there are characters in Avatar who are "pure evil". But here's the catch; "pure evil" doesn't mean that they're demons who were born evil, it just basically means that they don't have a soft side. They once did, but it has been lost after years of ever deepening depravity.

From what I gather there are only three characters in the Avatar Saga (ATLA & TLOK combined) who are truly evil; Sozin, Azulon and Ozai. In ATLA the overall theme is "good vs. evil", so it's fitting that the three warlords who devastated the balance of the world are truly evil. In TLOK the theme is more political and judging by the story, no character there is truly evil. On the subject of Azula, she clearly does have a buried soft side that in the end caused her breakdown. She might have ended up as truly evil had it not been for Zuko's intervention, but he was also at risk of falling down the path of his forefathers.

Long story short: In Avatar the definition of pure evil is the absence of a soft side, the soft side was there in the beginning but it's been lost. Only Sozin, Azulon and Ozai were pure evil. Zuko and Azula would have gone down the same path (or died) had it not been for Aang's return.
kelly1412 Featured By Owner Aug 13, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I think her soft side is quite obvious, I especially like the beach episode that illustrate her other side rather than a power hunger princess, but there is some, not a few people, does equal her as pure evil. it's not fair

Hmmm. You draw well, I write well. WE SHOULD MAKES COMIC!!!

kelly1412 Featured By Owner Jul 3, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
comic and illustration is actually two different thing ^^;
Making comic requires advanced skills in telling story with image sequences, rather than the drawing skill.
I wish I could do comic, and I'm planing to try something out later this year.
pyromaniac831 Featured By Owner Jul 4, 2012  Hobbyist Writer
We made a comic once, givin it was stick figures but the story was solid. Well, if you do decide to make one, we wish you the best of luck.
