Yaaawn! by KeldBach Yaaawn! by KeldBach
After having slept all day, submerged in the water, one of the Hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius) suddenly surfaced with a big yawn. He's a huge fella and weighs about two tonnes. Taken at the Copenhagen Zoo. See also:

what an excellent shot... you must have  a lot of patience lol... which is something good photographers need when shooting animals..... and look at those teeth lol.... I always thought hippos were kind of cute... but after seeing the teeth... I will admire their cuteness from a very long distance lol.

Sure, better keep a safe distance. Even Hippos are vegetarians, they're considered the most dangerous animal in Africa. Glad you liked the shot :D

:O I've never seen a large mouth in animal other than a great white shark....
It's funny how people mistake them for docile creatures but I guess if you leave them alone they'll hopefully leave you alone :XD:
:D Really awesome closeup. ;)

Glad you liked it. Even not a predator, the Hippo is the most dangerous animal in Africa. The one that kills the most humans every year. They have zero tolerance for anyone entering their territory, whether on land or in the water, and will attack an intruder immediately. You can't outrun a Hippo on land and if you're in a canoe on the river, you don't stand a chance to escape. So yes, better leave them alone :D

Now you can clearly see why more people are killed by hippos every year in Africa than crocodiles. Hippos are territorial and damn dangerous!

They certainly have. The teeth are mainly used for fighting and killing, although they solely feed on grass. Take a look here: [link]
