Full Throttle

He did it again: went water skiing all the way from one end of the Lagoon to the other. And almost at the same time of the day as last week. I wonder if this is a reoccurring, daily event, or if he only does it when I am around with my camera...

He's a she, a Pen not a Cob :D Great sequence

Thanks, Will :)

But why do you think it's a she? I followed this pair of swans closely for a few months and this guy was considerably bigger than the other one, so I assumed it was the male. Are there other ways to distinguish between the genders?

It may be the angle, but the black basal knob on its beak looks rather small. On a Cob it's much larger & prominent.

Here's a close-up of a Cob Taking on Grit by EarthHart  And here's a Pen Portrait of a Pen by EarthHart  spot the difference :D

That's correct, Will, but in this case there wasn't much difference regarding that knob as you can see here:

Swan Up Close by KeldBach White Lady by KeldBach

It's the same swan to the left and I used to recognise him by the little black dot at the lower part of his head. Quite an aggressive guy, by the way. The Pen to the right was much friendlier and spent most of her time nesting and later taking care of the Cygnets they got. Apart from that, the difference in size was the best way I could distinguish between the two individuals.

I've never seen a Cob with a little black knob before :giggle:
All the ones I've seen have large one, some coming over the nasal apertures.
