The Dreamer by Keithspangle The Dreamer by Keithspangle
Another oldie from the 80's that I had up in a previous DA incarnation. Oil on canvas and about 18" X 24 ". It was inspired by my job in a pet store when we adopted an abused parrot who had been locked in a cage so long that he was afraid to climb out, even when we opened his door.

Awesome message. I love how you set up the composition with the open blue and a free bird behind him!

Thank you! :)  Most people don't see the free bird....who is meant to represent the caged bird's dream of freedom.

I like the message in this painting. The cage is open but the Owl stays in his cage, the clouds represent the dream?

Thank you! :)If you look to the right of the cage you might see a green bird flying among the clouds.  The parrot in the cage dreams of flying but never does, even though the cage has no door and all he needs to do is climb out and fly to make his dream come true.  I got the idea from dealing with an abused parrot who had been locked in a tiny cage for so long it was terrified of actually leaving the cage.  People can be like this true...people who get so accustomed to their limitations that they loose the ability to go beyond them.

Poor parrot. The picture is so much sadder when we know the story behind it. I'm sure glad you found a good home for him!

As I recall he went home with a lady who had several other parrots and lots of time to spend with him.   When we had him we kept him in a large room with other parrots whose perches we uncovered during the day.  So between their example and his new home, I am sure he is still doing well and is happy.

I alway highly respect people who are able to paint so beautiful with oil colours (oil colours hate me even more then my watercolours do^^' I should practise more often).
The background story is sad (poor bird...) and your picture captures this perfectly.

Thank you! He eventually went to a good home as I recall. I hope he got better. I found a lot of similarities between him and people who dream of escaping their cages, but never do.
I've been doing oils for years...and they still give me problems. Not sure if I could do watercolors now if I tried: I think it's a less forgiving medium than oil and I do like to cover up my flubs!:)
