While going through your dA inbox, have you ever come across a deviation, or a pile of deviations, that looks less than impressive, think "huh, why am I watching this person?" ... only to find out that this is the same artist who made a bunch of your favorite pictures a while ago?

In other words, that artist's new works don't seem as good as their old ones. Not a good thing to happen.

Then I realized. LOOOOOOL at least they're still posting stuff. Me? When was the last time I posted something -- finished something postable? I can't even remember!

So I've been itchin' to make something nice and detailed and shiny, I really have been. Unfortunately, I am in the process of recovering from a nasty hand injury (on both hands! Not that it matters since I'm not ambidextrous). I can type slowly, but I can't put much pressure on my right index and middle fingers, which makes it hard to hold the stylus, let alone make hard pressure strokes.

The recovery shouldn't take long, though. Once my hands are back to full functionality, I will start working on a new painting that I believe will be post-worthy. I already know what it's going to be of! It's for a special person I've recently come to know IRL. No, make that two new paintings for two special people. :)

Hi there,

I found your comic a few days ago and devoured it! You have written a wonderful story and can't wait to see more. Thank you for sharing your story and hope to see more soon. Your artwork in your comic is also beautiful and love looking at it over and over again. It's better than most paid graphic novel works that I have seen and that is no exaggeration.

Art skill wise, I've noticed that at times with some of the people I watch. In regards to what ~Zephyr-Aryn said, that could be true. But maybe they are just wanting to post some stuff to let watchers know they're still alive. Or at least what their artwork looks like before it's finished.
Maybe they just wanted to doodle. =D I think most people get art recession or something at times. ;)

As for your hands, I hope by now they're way better. You should've learned to use your toes. =D

There are times I feel like I'm one of those guys. I've seen this happen to some artist I used to follow in comics. I don't know if it's time constraints or falling into set shorthand pattern of drawing just for the sake of putting stuff out. Hope that made sense.

Had no idea you were hurt! Hope your hand injury is mostly healed by now.

Perhaps their art looks less impressive because you have actually improved your skills enough to be able to find mistakes you otherwise would not have noticed.

That's always a possibility, but not much more positive with regards to the other artist. I don't improve that fast. Which means they must be improving even slower than I am...

Personally, I've found it interesting when I surpass the idols I used to look up to as a kid. It's not that they've gotten any worse, you just look at it again and it's not amazing as you thought it was a few years back. Haven't gotten someone who actually regressed in skill yet, though

I hate when that happens! It's awful when you find out an artists quality isn't as good as it used to be....

I have a feeling my watchers probably think that way about my recent stuff....
(In my opinion) my old stuff is more awesome than anything I try to do now... =\

I dunno why...it's almost like it's a "seasonal" talent o.O

Lol. This has indeed happened. Not always a loss of quality, but sometimes a 2D artist will go to 3D (or vice versa) or a drawer will take up photography and it's just like... Dude, you suck now. Or their style will completely alter... usually a matter of getting more cartoony... and Dude, I have no interest in your work now. :P

I hope your hands heal soon! It really sucks to have even one taken out, much less both-- you have my sincere sympathies.

It might also be that they're putting less effort into what they're doing, like if they have less time for dA/fanart/art in general and so they just start putting up whatever for the heck of it. (Well...that's what's happened to me, anyway. derp.)

Anyway, I'm sorry about your hands! I hope they feel better soon. It's nice to hear from you, though, at least! :)

I think that's what was happening to me prior to the hand injury. I was doodling a decent amount, but they were all crappy rough sketches so I didn't even bother doing sketch dumps. Maybe I should, though. It's amazing and fascinating how each artist's unique style manifests in rough sketches.

I dunno, I respect people who change, it's all a process of growing as a person and as an artist, just because their new stuff might not look as impressive as the old to you doesn't mean to say it isn't, If that makes sense.

I guess what I'm trying to say is everyone has different tastes and everyone's tastes change over time so it's only natural that as an artist or a viewer our tastes would change.

It's all good to me, but if you don't like what they do anymore, then why are you still watching them? There's nothing wrong with cleaning out your favourites and watch list every now and then. ;)

From a random watcher. :)

Yup, it's happened to me before. Sometimes they take their style in a different direction than I'm interested in. Kinda weird to think how I loved all their old art, but times change! Sometimes I look at art I faved awhile ago and realize I don't really like it anymore. I think it's good if your tastes change a little though from time to time, shows you're still growing as an artist.

I've missed seeing your paintings around! Looking forward to them, and hope your hands heal fully and as quickly as possible! (:

First, sorry about your hands, and get well soon! I definitely know what that's like!

Anyway, I figure I'm probably one of those people... (this be Lea, BTW :) ). I know now, I've dropped the anime-thing and just drawing what come naturally. It doesn't always look amazing, but I'm usually more satisfied with the results, since it's more me than me trying to be something I'm not :)

I've seen it happen a few times; when somebody had such a fantastic style and they were my inspiration to draw and everything, but then changed it to something either generic or less than appealing... Either way, as you said, at least they're still uploading stuff, ha. :) To each their own, I guess.
I lost a lot of commenters/watchers on my old account when I stopped doing extremely huge-eyed animu stuff lolol. My art was never super fab to begin with, but it seemed like a lot of people only commented on my superduper omg cutesy animu stuff when I was in that phase, and I kinda got sick of that after a while sooo ehhhh.

& I hope your hands get better o.o Just don't push them too hard while you're still recovering, hehe~
Looking forward to seeing the paintings you have in mind though!

DEFINITELY! I've been on dA for almost 4 years now (holy crap) and I have noticed my taste in art has been slowly changing. it used to be anime/fanart drawings but now it has mostly become more high quality photography. I've beome more picky too.

I can't wait to see what you come up with. I know you do many great things :)

I've done that a few times, sort of. There are some artists that I've been watching for years. I used to idolize them or think their artwork was spectacular; more recently they've seemed just average.

It took me a while to realize the person's artwork was the same relative quality. It was just my ability to understand artistic techniques, styles, compositions, etc that has improved. But I guess that's to be expected after four years of art school and plenty of work on improving myself lol.

I know that feeling. :ohnoes: Though to be exact, I think I AM improving... just at a ridiculously slow pace. You know that "draw that again" meme thingie? Some people redraw something they did only a couple of years ago, and the new version is 100000000000x better. To show that kind of improvement, I'll have to pick something I did like 12 years ago.

Hehe, I remember improving in leaps and bounds at first... but it's definitely slowed down over time. At this point it's like my taste is changing faster than my skills. It's OK though. I think it's good to never be satisfied with one's art.

I noticed that with a few people I have been following for a long time. The stuff is good but it's the same. Growth always makes someone's work more interesting, or at least variety in their skillset.

It's a bit like music. Where a band releases a new album and people don't like it, and prefer their old sound.

But I think all artists evolve over time. A lot of people also stop drawing all together when they get older.

that's a bad....thing , as an artist I'm really scared of that. Rather than that there're cases that the artists were just doing doodles and ended up the gallery quality's wrecked.
