There's an oooold art in my gallery, of two naked girls and one heavily patterned fabric. I really don't like that picture, I never did... and it's been a thorn at my side how, despite its overall suckiness, it was STILL my best work in the patterned fabric department.

I wanted to make a new, better one. So here it is. The character is Lushaka from my comic Heart of Keol heartofkeol.com

I admire your love for patterns and tapestry~ the cool to warmth color also add to the story of the personality.
and love the mysterious quality of this one, makes one feel intrigued about the character to learn more. :D

How did do the patterns on the clothes?

1) Draw gold patterns on a new layer, lock transparency once the drawing is done

2) Draw the colored patterns on a new layer (or even 2-3 new layers, depending on how you work with colors and layers) below the gold layer; lock transparency once that's done

3) Apply shading/highlights. There are so many different ways of doing this. One of the methods I used for this pic was coloring directly inside the pattern layers, which is where the lock transparency comes handy.

The order is not set in stone. I had some highlights applied before I started drawing the patterns!

If you look at this WIP shot, keii4ii.tumblr.com/post/165869… you can see how I have some of the gold patterns drawn. I wanted the gold patterns to be more reflective than the rest of the fabric, so I colored inside the patterns with manually chosen colors. The highlights on the rest of the picture were applied using a linear dodge layer to save time.

This looks amazing! The amount of detail in the clothes is incredible and the shading and lighting is also really well done! Fantastic work.

The clothing in itself is a work of art and the lighting with such lustrous clothing is a very complicated thing :wow:

Thank you! I'm very tempted to do something even more complex... something similar to this, but with like 80% of the image covered with patterns? X'D It would be fun (and time consuming) to do!

wow, that would be interesting to see. Good luck!

Thank you! I've made an attempt and it turned into a different kind of a pic. Ah well, I'll keep trying! X'D

The detail on his clothing... I can't even begin to imagine how long it took. It's BEAUTIFUL!
