=================================================

Hi Everyone,

Animé Deviation has started a new Art Book Project in hopes to publish an artbook of high quality original animé style Art.

As the title of this page implies, we are planning to publish an artbook containing original animé style art (Before I say anything more, please pay careful attention to the wording of the previous statement. To clarify, "original" means something that you create yourself (ie. not copied or traced from others), and "animé style art" does NOT mean drawing art of existing animé. What "animé style art" means is the art that is drawn should follow along one (or more) of the many methodologies of how animé is depicted) Ok, with that out of the way, hopefully we will NOT get any art entries from anyone that contain licensed animé characters (or anything that's licensed for that matter).

As this is suppose to be a fan based art book, it's pretty obvious that we need fans like you to submit your original artwork, but before we jump into the details of how to submit and the rules/requirements, let me just mention a little background on why this project was brought about and the goals of this project.

So you might ask "But there's so many animé artbooks out there, why even bother?" Well, I think my answer to that would be that a majority of those artbooks are done by people that are already in the professional arena (Don't get me wrong. I love animé and I think these artists are doing a great job. I'm just pointing out an observation). Yet if you think about it, all these "professionals" don't just become professionals overnight. It takes lots of hard work, dedication, and most importantly they were given a chance to prove themselves and they came out on top. A good "chance" is, in most cases, few and hard to come by for the general public. Therefore one of the goals of this project is to open doors and give anyone the opportunity to submit an entry. Picture this, an assembled artwork book made by people just like you. No matter if you're a procrastinating high school student, a coffee-go-getting-office worker, a Super Kid (note: if you're under 18, and if your art is selected, you still need your parent or guardian's approval for it to be able to be printed) or a kid at heart, (or even a professional artist ^_^) ... etc, art and art alone is the determining factor. Bottom line is ... if you have artistic talent, and can draw well, we want your work displayed in this artbook.

As mentioned a couple of times already above, this artbook will be published. We are also hoping to put this artbook out into the market for sale. Again, don't get me wrong here. We are not looking to make a profit from this (as the book will be priced accordingly to cover just the printing costs and other fees). The goal here is to try to maximize the exposure of the book. If more people see or hear about the artbook, that in turn means more people will be interested in seeing the art inside the artbook, which in turn gives the artists more exposure, which can translate into possible future opportunities for the artists. (Hey, even looks good on a resumé!)

Anyhow, I guess that should be enough to give a general understanding of the purpose of this project and where I'm coming from. So without more blabbing, let me bring up the perks that you get if your art submission is accepted by us to be included in the artbook:

What you get if your submitted artwork is selected to be included in the artbook (Please note that only submissions that have been selected for print gets the below.

1. Your artwork will be printed in the artbook (Duh, I guess that goes without saying ^_~)

2. $25 per selected piece of artwork (ie. In order to make it so that we have a good variety of artwork from various artists, there is a maximum limit of two (2) pieces of selected artwork per artist. In other words, if we already selected two (2) art pieces from you, we will not select any more pieces to include in this artbook. So that means that the maximum amount possible per artist is $50) Note that the $25 can be paid to your paypal account (if you have one), or if that doesn't work, then I can do online gift certificates (ie. like ebay gift certificate, amazon ... etc). I'm pretty flexible in this matter and am open for suggestions.

3. You will receive a free copy of the artbook (ie. when it has been printed. Note that you will only get one (1) artbook even if two (2) of your art pieces are selected to be printed)

List of requirements for the art submission:
1) Your artwork must be original (and done by you)
2) The theme for the Artbook is the word “First” The artwork that you submit must use or be based on this theme in some way, form, or fashion.
3) The artwork must be in CMYK color mode.  (if you're not sure what CMYK is, please read brief description on the way bottom)
4) The artwork needs to be 300 dpi.
5) The image size should be the same size you want the image to appear in print. The minimum dimension of your artwork is 4 inches x 4 inches and the maximum dimension is 7 inches x 9 inches.
Any size in between these two values is acceptable.
6) If work is scanned, please make sure that it is also scanned in 300 dpi and the colors are converted into CMYK.
7) The submitted artwork must be a completed piece of artwork and should be colored and/or shaded. Please don’t submit drafts or anything that looks incomplete or sloppy.
8) To keep things fresh, please submit artwork that has not been previously posted/printed/displayed elsewhere (either in print, or online)
9) No Hentai or overly suggestive artwork. Mild nudity is ok as long as it’s done in a tasteful manner.
10) Your art submission should be in one of these 3 formats: EPS, TIFF, or JPEG
11) Just for submission purposes, please try to keep the file size small (ie. less than 2 megs). If your
artwork is selected to be printed in the Artbook, we will notify you and ask for a high quality version.

Please note that all artwork submitted will be judged using a points system and only artwork that has reached or gone beyond the cutoff line will be selected for print.  This is to ensure that all the art found in this artbook will be of highest quality.

For the full rules, explanation of how entries are judged (ie. the details on the points system) and submission instructions, click here or please visit www.animedeviation.com and click on the "Animé Style Art Book Project" link on the left hand side.  :)

Thanks,

** Note:  Below is a brief description of CMYK color space as compared to RGB color space:

I guess to keep it short, the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color space is the one that your computer monitor displays, so most pictures you see online and on websites are usually in RGB color. CMYK uses 4 colors(Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) and is the scheme that production printers (ie. book printing, poster printing ...etc) uses.

The main thing to note here is that RGB can display some colors that CMYK can't, and the reverse is true where CMYK can display some colors that RGB can't.

Therefore, since the project's ultimate goal is to have a printed artbook, having all images in CMYK will minimize surprises/shock/pain of finding that the printed artwork doesn't match the color of the original artwork that's in RGB mode.

Most computer art programs have ways to convert your current RGB image to CMYK (and vice versa), but just note that there will be a loss/difference of colors (depending on colors used) because of the spectrum of colors that each mode is able to display. So if say you use photoshop, when you open a new picture, you have a choice of what mode you want (ie. RGB, CMYK, grayscale ...etc), so if you're starting a new picture, you would of course just pick CMYK as the mode. If your picture is already in RGB, you can convert it by just going to the "Image pull down menu -> Mode -> select CMYK color" This is how you would do it in photoshop, but even if you don't use photoshop, the graphics program you are using should have some type of option to convert the color mode.

This website has a more detailed explanation and also some good pictures that show the color space of RGB as compared to CMYK  dx.sheridan.com/advisor/cmyk_c…
