Winterhearted 21 by Kechake-stock Winterhearted 21 by Kechake-stock

NB! I specifically asked the model to hold the violin wrong. For a better composition.

It was freezing outside (lovely Estonian weather indeed) and there were only the 4 of us - me, the model Johanna and my two friends who helped a lot with putting up a fire in that abandoned house where we had this fantastic photoshoot.

Makeup, hair, clothes etc by me.
Model Johanna.

The violin was cheap and bought from eBay. It makes only awful sounds but at least looks pretty! :kitty:

This is lovely and I congratulate you on the DD, however, she is placing the bow completely wrong on the violin. For future reference, the bow should be resting between the bridge and the neck of the violin.

This is a beautiful photo. I've actually seen it all over, edited and whatnot, using this as stock, and I must say I am glad to have found the original. A very beautiful model, with an intense expression, and I love the composition--indeed, holding the violin unusually certainly made it a wonderful image, along with everything else.

Hi, I was wondering if you know that a violin seller on eBay was using this photo in their listing? It looks like the same violin you own so maybe you gave them permission?…

Why would you tell the model to hold the violin wrong?

For what it's worth, stuff like that drives us musicians CRAZY!! It makes the model and the artist/photographer look dumb/ignorant, because those of us who play (I'm a cellist) know better. It's just painful seeing this kind of thing.

If the model were holding the violin properly -- her left wrist straight and the bow on the strings where you actually play (*never* on the fingerboard!), it would be such a beautiful shot. As it is....owwww. :(

I'm curious to see your other shots of this model and violin, hopefully with proper form. :D
Kechake-stock Featured By Owner Apr 14, 2014
why would you waste your time complaining about an image that is more than four years old
Sageoftwilight56 Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I know I'm kind of butting in here, as in I'm not part of this conversation, but I would like to point something out to you. I understand that you're a musician, and that you think she is holding the violin the wrong way, but as the artist stated, it was for better composition, most likely to include more of it in the shot and give a more dramatic look. Chances are, the model doesn't even play violin (or viola, not sure which) but whatever the case, it comes across as rude when you put it in the wording that you did. I understand it drives you crazy, but as it is a photograph, not an actual interpretation of a violinist, I think it would be best to keep your opinions to yourself on this one. It makes you seem haughty, and no one wants to be haughty. The artist/photographer expressed her purpose in making the positioning wrong, and it seems arrogant to express your disdain at that. I don't want to start a fight here, just some food for thought. :)
agoldenquill Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2014  Professional Writer
Apologies to Winterhearted if what I said came across "haughty" (CERTAINLY not intended as such). It's just the honest truth. So many bad images of musicians holding instruments wrong, and it baffles me as to why anyone would purposely have a model hold an instrument incorrectly. It's a pet peeve of musicians -- not all, perhaps, but the majority I know. And the photos are so GORGEOUS otherwise, it's just rather sad that the "wrong on purpose" part detracts from the beauty of the photos.

(And Sageoftwilight, it's not that I "think" she's holding it the wrong way -- she IS holding it the wrong way. Whether it was for "better composition" or dramatic effect is highly debatable.)

BTW, the repeated use of words like "rude", "keep your opinions to yourself" (I thought comments were for the purpose of feedback on the work?), "haughty", "haughty" (twice), "arrogant", and "disdain" comes across to me like verbal flagellation. Commenting that you felt my comments were harsh; fine. Repeatedly flogging me over the head -- IMHO, haughty.

Again, BEAUTIFUL shots, Winterhearted, and kudos to Johanna for braving the cold to model for them! :)
Sageoftwilight56 Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I apologize to you, for whilst writing those words, I was being them myself. There are just so many people out there who act like they are better than everyone else when they are not, and I jumped to conclusions and took your comment as snarky when it was not. I was being hypocritical, and I shouldn't have said those things. It is a lovely picture, whether or not she's holding the instrument right, and I understand your criticism was intended to be constructive. Occasionally I will type things without thinking about the effect they have because I'm angry about something in my own life, and I need to break that habit. I'm sorry if I came across as rude, it wasn't intended to be. I hope I didn't come across that way, but if I did, I apologize.
agoldenquill Featured By Owner Mar 26, 2014  Professional Writer
Thank you, Sageoftwilight! It *is* a lovely picture, and that is the point of the comments here: to offer feedback, both positive and negative, to the artist for his or her art, which we both agree is a lovely shot. :)
