Contest Essay
Visual communication is one of the most powerful methods of exchanging information. From ancient illustrations of religious texts to modern advertisements, visual communication has been used throughout history to convey what words alone cannot. Humans demonstrate this in everyday conversations, we ‘talk with our hands’, exaggerate expressions, point, wink, nod or shake our heads. The meaning of these gestures could be expressed using only words, but it wouldn’t be the same. Such is the case with visual art. Art can be used to communicate with an audience on a deeper level. Art has the extraordinary capability of informing and persuading the viewer, while evoking an emotional response from them. It has the potential to transcend language barriers; in some cases the emotional impact of a piece can still be felt regardless of what language the viewer speaks. It has been an integral part of our history, society, and culture and remains a part of who we are as a species.
<p>In the case of my entry, I set out with no specific message in mind, but rather attempted to portray the concept of speaking visually. The bold colors and detailed designs serve to draw the eye in, while the mouth and megaphone motif represent the idea of speaking. The multiple colors and arrows symbolize the variety in thoughts, ideas, concepts that can be communicated visually, as well as the different directions these ideas can take.
