Deviation Actions

This month I'd like to talk about a recent Daily Deviation. It was a self suggestion, I know that the photographer won't mind me saying this and he's immensely proud of his work, that much was clear when we talked.

hotamr suggested his Colours of Ramadam series to me and as soon as I saw the image I responded that the series was nice, but it looked very much like photo-manipulation. So hotamr took the time to walk me through all of the steps that he took, the lengths he went to and the hours he spent on getting the final product. I urge you to read his interview at the Phoblographer for more information. Check it out here. It was nice to be reminded of the traditional lengths that can be taken to achieve a shot rather than be walked through the history of Photoshop editing. Both do have their merits - what do you prefer?

On the topic of Self Suggestions, it's often seen as something that we should be ashamed of. I often get a lot of self suggestions with apologies in the note. Never apologise for wanting to promote your own work. As long as you believe in yourself, you should share your work and inspire others to do the same. Have faith in yourself first, and the rest will fall into place later. It helps if you share the history behind a shot, when you self-suggest, and the reasons why you think it should be a Daily Deviation. We ask for this because it helps us gain a little more insight and get to know you as a photographer - just like I did with hotamr.

There's nothing wrong with photoshop, which is a skill unto itself. I think artists should use all the tools at their disposal. Whether they're manually setting up photographs, or using photoshop to create something specific. Both are fun. It's just dependant on the person. No one should be in the business of policing what an artist should and shouldn't use when creating.

hotamr's work shows that persistence pays off. I'm glad the individual lantern was chosen for a DD (which was my favourite out of the lot), rather than the collab image shown above. I read the article, now I've read it I can see the once invisible fish lines. Well done hotamr!

I loved the Cruella De Ville cosplay, 101 Dalmatians was one of my favourite Disney movies (I even enjoyed the live-action one, but then again Glenn Close does save it!). The photographer has really captured the subject well, and has done well with the light and shadow.

I also love the infrared castle.

I'll have to check out some of those links, especially the memory card one. Edit - checked the memory card one, was OK. Also looked at "zoom or move closer", which was disappointly short.
It probably depends on the camera (probably more so for compacts than DSLRs). My last camera could not handle close-ups, the Autofocus just never focused on anything, so macro images were made with zoom (up to x8 optical). My newest camera prefers close-up to zoom for Autofocus, then again it only has x4 optical, which doesn't really work so well (Manual focus would be nice, which it could have incorporated on this cam as it has manual zoom).

Yeah, I thought the individual lantern had the most impact :)

I love infrared, if you enjoy looking at those sorts of images then standby for our Infrared photography week coming up at PE :) I'm excited to learn about it all!
bergunty's avatar
I must admit, Infrared isn't something I enjoy, but there have been a couple of standout images lately. It will be interesting to learn the techniques!
