David Boreanaz by kaytii David Boreanaz by kaytii
To go with my portrait of Emily Deschanel [link] (They star in Bones together for those who don't know :D). It took me a while to find a good reference and even now I'm not sure how I feel about it  All I know is I that wanted a happy shot, and nice photos of a grinning David B are few and far between!

I also take back what I said about Emily Deschanel's hair being difficult to do - at least there was some logic to it; David's hair was just :O??? I'm just hopeless at hair xD

Anyway, I hope you like this regardless!~

This seems impossible :o
This is excellent work, just like a real photograph.
How do you get it to be so realistic? (Is it because of a specific type of pencil?)

Haha thanks a lot  I'm not sure how to answer your question because I don't think it looks all too realistic myself, at least in style xD But no special pencil was used :) Thanks for faving too!

Hey, you're awesome! I think this piece is outstanding! Not to be nosey or anything, but you ever use a graphite paper like material to trace an outline, just to get facial proportions right? Im just trying to get a sense of what other artists I admire process is like. I realize that shading and everything else is freehand. Great work!! Thanks for sharing!!

Thank you again ! I did all my drawings by eye until my "Hands in Graphite" drawing because the anatomy was just too difficult for me. For that drawing I drew a grid on the paper itself, then marked out significant points and outlines, then erased the grid. Since then I've used the grid to at least position where my figure is on the paper, but other than that I have no patience to draw out a whole grid, so I try to do everything by eye if I can. What about you, do you draw?

Wow!!! First let me thank you for responding!! That's so incredible to be able to it by eye!! Yes, I do draw a little. I've only done a handle full of portraits, they always take me soooo long to complete, and I always seem to lose motivation about half-way through. I appreciate your sharing if your process with me. I've always drawn my portraits by eye until recently when I was speaking with an other artist who was telling me that most portrait artists use graphite paper to get accurate proportions and save time-only few are even skilled enough to draw by eye (its so refreshing and impressive to hear that you do!!). I was surprised because too me, that seems a bit like cheating, but apparently quite a few artist do it. Thank you for proving that it is possible to achieve such photo-realism completely relying on yourself and your own artistic instincts! Your beautiful work and now knowing your process are so very inspiring to me! :]]

Oh you should upload some of your portraits!

It can take me a while to complete one too because I can lose motivation sometimes, and sometimes things just won't look right no matter what I do, and it just bums me out. But once you upload it, to others, it seems like you pumped it out instantly xD

Yep, when I read in some artists' FAQ that they use a grid, I thought it was sort of cheating too. I suspected some artists did use it but I didn't realise that it wasn't shameful - that it was an acceptable way of producing photorealistic drawings. But so much of the technique and ability comes through in shading as well, and you can't fake that, so I'm okay with it now. It would really save a lot of time and frustration, and maybe we'd get more drawings done that way, hah! have you tried using a grid or graphite paper since you spoke to the other artist? It's worth trying. I'm actually not familiar with graphite paper, how does it work?

Anyway, glad I could help! You sure know how to butter me up, how could I not respond =P!
