So with 1993's Super Mario Bros. movie being both a critical and financial disaster, Nintendo was understandably pretty wary of bringing their games to the silver screen again. As such, when they were pitched the idea of a new Mario movie by Universal Studios while working on Super Nintendo Land (going there is on my personal bucket list BTW), they wanted much more involvement this time, with Shigeru Miyamoto himself giving his personal touch on the project.

The animation company they worked with was Illumination, known for the Despicable Me franchise and... some rather subpar Dr. Seuss movies.

And it was to be directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, known for creating... Teen Titans Go.

But Nintendo helped hype the film up by announcing it's cast... which mostly consisted of celebrities like Chris Pratt
