Yes that was my intended time period that is also why I did not include the hat because he changes up his look cause of all the wanted posters.

Sorry it took me awhile to reply I don't get a chance to log in very often. For everyday practice do A lot of sketching from life Learn to make observations. Also you can work through books like the various Loomis Books are very good. Also when it comes to working on a finished piece thumbnails are extremely important. Do little thumbnail size sketches to figure out major compositional elements try to imagine it in 3 elements white grey and black. I do around 30 thumbnails for each finished painting even if I go with my original idea I keep trying to think of different ways to compose the image. Keep in mind you need to keep your thumbnails very loose these will mostly be shapes. (Loomis has very good info on thumbnail and composition) Then once you decide on a thumbnail you like sketch it out a little bigger and little more detailed but keep in mind what you discovered at the thumbnail stage. Check out muddycolors.blogspot.com this site has extremely valuable info! also you can put Work in Progress pieces up in the forums at conceptart.org to get advise. hope this helps.
