Deforestation

Description

Some information about deforestation in Southeast Asia:
(Will change this to a written entry later :P )
The main causes of deforestation across the world are attributed to complex social and market forces. These forces serve as the driving conversion of rainforests into pastureland, plantations, and cropland.
Out of all of the main causes of deforestation, the one that is the most responsible for the largest share of deforestation in the developing world is agricultural expansion. Agricultural expansion serves as the leading driving cause of deforestation in Southeast Asia where demand is high. Malaysia and Indonesia currently produce 85 percent of the world’s supply of palm oil.
The rainforests are usually burned in order to clear the land for plantations of oil palm. In the process of burning the rainforest, 100 times the greenhouse gas of conventional forest fires is released since these forests reside on peatland, which store massive amounts of carbon in addition to the carbon released from burning the trees alone. Not only are they endangering rare species in some cases, they are also destroying the tropical forests that serve as a home to an entire diversity of species with high rates of local endemism.
While burning biomass leaves behind waste that serves as fertilizer, there would be a continuous cycle of the release of carbon emissions from the fire that contributes to climate change and global warming with the increase of greenhouse gases if the process were to be repeated.

The increasing quantity of deforestation also contributes to many destructive effects on the environment. Forests store massive amounts of carbon dioxide which plays a crucial role in regulating the earth’s climate. Contrary to other ecosystems, mangrove forests store disproportionately high densities of carbon which place them at a higher level of importance in relation with carbon storage. Carbon dioxide is known as a greenhouse gas that retains the heat from sunlight that would otherwise be reflected back to the atmosphere. Although greenhouse gases are good for the environment, large quantities of it are detrimental towards the environment. As more trees are wiped out, the greater the carbon dioxide contributions towards global warming would be.

As seen in Before the Flood, a documentary film about the dangers of climate change and what should be done, a worker has claimed that officials in Indonesia have been bribed and bypass the requirements and allow companies to burn the forests to create plantations. It is an issue that needs to be addressed as it is illegal and also posing threats to the ecosystem and species. Many animals that inhabit the forests will become either endangered or even extinct through deforestation as it is. Certain species may only live in certain areas, so deforesting areas without assessing the residing species are likely to lead to the endangerment or extinction of various species.

As stated in “The Red Panda,” the latest statistics indicate that “the red panda population has dropped to 10,000,” reflecting the devastating effects of deforestation throughout the Southeast and South Asian region. The Sumatran tigers, Asian elephants, Malayan tapir, and Gurney’s Pitta are all globally- threatened species whom reside in the lowland forests of Southeast Asia where deforestation is massive.
By enforcing land-use regulations, creating new protected areas, and working to maintain the rule of law since 2004, Brazil was able to dramatically reduce the rate of deforestation by a substantial percentage of 83. As seen in Brazil’s success, Southeast Asian Governments should also adopt these policies as they are likely to help mitigate the devastating rates of deforestation to preserve the livelihood of these species.
