My fear takes hold, I flow onto the mold
Sinful souls, dark with fire
Burn freeze cold with desire
Heavens start to cry
Crawl for me, beg for me
To hear your cries
Why it seems like a life that dies ?

It's Jared. Anyone who'se been watching me for many years remember this ugly bastard?

I dunno what came over me to draw him, but it struck and I obey. His story in my head has changed a lot, as I gave it up years ago to pursue my fantasy story, but since my inspiration for that has slowed down a bit, I 've been thinking about other things. It's gotten a lot more macabre and kind of fucking creepy (to me, since I'm the one that has to deal with this shit in my head!) and going places I didn't think it would ever go years ago.

Maybe I'll give the story another try.

Kind of inspired by =Twelfth, and I've been wanting to work on using more subtle colors.

Pencil and inkwash mostly, with a bit of Photoshop. MUST DO MOAR INKWASH!!! I love how this turned out!

Suggester writes, "blessed be thy hate by =kittehness is a very raw, expressive image that deserves more attention by other artists. The detail and grunge like texture has been incredibly captured and the image itself is a treat to the eyes. I love how basic the palette for this image is, which is mostly monotone with the slight tint of pink around the elbow, hand and face." ( Suggested by Vellez and Featured by oilsoaked )

Wow, I am impressed. I love it. It screams at me to continue working on my story. Unfortunately, the inspiration for that has finally stopped after, what, five years? And now the muse that hangs over my head is giving me even more story ideas that I don't even need or want. The newest one in my head will now make it eighty two stories rambling around inside my head. How do you cope with the madness? Because they took me off my medication...

This is... just wow. Gorgeous, emotional, gripping. I cant find the word. This manages to tell a story without words and to force one to evoke their thought creating machine that commonly goes unused anyway.

Im sorry. I kind of knew what I was saying, but lost it. But Im leaving the ramble there because... well because.

I saw this piece the day it received a daily deviation and I thought it was absolutely magnificent. The concept was wonderful, and the composition must've really stuck in my head because the other day, when my painting teacher told us to find a point of inspiration, and work from it to make a water color piece, I thought of this. It took me forever to search through my favorites to find it again.

Aside from commending you on such a powerful piece, I was wondering if you would mind me using your piece as my point of inspiration. You utilized the transparency of the inks so well, and the composition is utterly astounding. I can't even begin to understand how you accomplished the anatomy.

Additionally, if you wouldn't mind, could you give some tips? I'm completely new to inks aside from some color studies. I understand some texture techniques such as salt, alcohol etc. but if you could maybe outline your process or even simply give me some suggestions, I'd be unbelievably grateful. :aww:

Keep up the great work! Thank you ahead of time, and I hope to see more from you in the future!

Thank you so much, and it's totally an honor to know that this piece inspires you so much :) I'm really happy it does, it's strange to me though how well this picture has been received o.O

I am fine with you taking some inspiration from this! I'd just love to see the finished product of course!

Not really sure what sort of tips to give, most of the time with art I feel like I'm floundering around trying to figure out how to make something work.

Well, I started this picture on smooth bristol board, I sketched Jared out, and I've done anatomy studies and I have a bunch of anatomy books so those helped, but I know it's still not very accurate XD I scanned the sketch next because I was all afraid of ruining it, since I hadn't ever done something in ink wash. So after that I started just painting with the ink like I would watercolors, and also to get a lot of watery textures I thoroughly soaked the paper with water and dripped ink onto it so it would flow around and dry that way. I'd dab some up, add more ink, throw more water around, etc until I got where I liked it. Finished textures with some drybrushing and additional layers of darks/lights. Then I did some Photoshoppery to it, as I said in the description. Just enhanced the contrast, and added the tints of color.

So uh, I don't know what tips I can give, other than experimenting with the materials, with the amount of water not only ink the ink but on the brush, on the paper, how much you dab up or add more, etc.

Probably wasn't very helpful at all XD Sorry! But thanks again for your amazing comment and inspiration, I really appreciate it.
zapzapzizzle Featured By Owner Nov 22, 2009
I'm so happy to hear that! I'm amazed at how well you constructed this piece. You said in your artist's comment that this was one of the few times you've ever worked with ink wash, correct? You certainly did a fine job.

Aaa, I'm kind of nervous now! I'll try my best to complete this piece to my satisfaction, but at this point I really have to move on even though I don't quite like the composition of it, simply for the sake of the grade. I definitely plan on redoing this piece in the future. I don't actually believe I have the artistic skills to portray the piece as of yet, but the temptation of trying was simply too much!

I'm utterly amazed you do so well with that level of spontaneity. I can't even begin to fathom when I'll be able to do such a thing.

Thank you so much, for everything! I feel as though I can't say this enough. I was so unsure as to how you achieved so many of the effects on this piece, your reply helped a lot. I don't believe I have many questions as of now, but if I run into any problems later on, would you mind if I noted you?

I was surprised when I saw the top of the image. Usually in contexts like this, even if the being is experiencing darkness, the release is still just that, a release.. yet your character here is trapped, and whether he's holding himself back or something else binds him is an intriguing question indeed.

Simply coloured images are always so enjoyable and dramatic. The grungy feel inkwash lends is well played upon the expressiveness in your pencil work. It's beautiful, and I'm glad you were recognized for such a gripping piece.
