I am so glad that the staff have listened to our feedback about needing more customization options in Eclipse, however the just released "custom" boxes leave a lot to be desired. Putting aside bugs in the system for the moment, let's just talk about basic functionality. Current custom boxes, no matter who made them or what they're meant to do, contain three basic elements:
  1. A custom background.
  2. An inner box of some form. (Not always, but if they don't have it the good ones still make things readable by not having a complex background.)
  3. Buttons of some form.
Eclipse custom boxes do not have an option for 2 or 3. They have some other great stuff like easily addable backgrounds, gifs, images, and image formatting. But without an inner box especially they can EASILY end up hard or impossible to read. As for buttons, they help with conversion (getting people to click things) and organization. Also they just look nice.

I threw together a quick (and dirty) mock-up of some relatively minor changes to the current interface that I think could help with this:

Eclipse Custom Box Interface Suggestion by Katy-L-Wood

Firstly, killed the weird side box. It is weird and random and out of place.

I then added an option for inner boxes which can have a color or a gradient BUT NOT A PATTERN OR IMAGE. This is to help prevent readability issues. Added a custom border option for the inner box as well. Also an option for custom gradients and more patterns, patterns that would be submitted by the community for other deviants to choose from.

Lastly I added an option for adding buttons. Text, link, colors, and style are all provided.

These things cover all three basics of current custom boxes without involving freeform HTML at all, which the staff have stated is their aim. It gives users plenty of flexibility to create an elegant, readable, and functional custom box that matches their profile style. Yes, there will still be certain aspects of current custom boxes that don't convert, but this would get us a lot closer.

So. Thoughts? Feelings? Do you think something like this would work better for you? Worse? What flaws do you see in the concept?

Katy L. Wood is an author and illustrator who lives in varying areas of Colorado with her two cats, Rumble and Rebel. She is the oldest daughter of the youngest son of a huge Colorado family that has been in the state for generations, and she has always been fascinated by the history and dynamics of people in the Colorado Rockies.

The majority of her childhood was being handed a bear-whistle, pushed out the door into the forest, and told to be back for dinner. Occasionally she would have cousins with her, occasionally she’d be alone. There were many adventures to creepy abandoned trailers with bones in the front yard (which she learned as an adult were not actually abandoned, making them ten times creepier), up creeks while making rudimentary maps, and into old mine shafts. Honestly, it is probably a miracle she survived to adulthood. She is now taking bets on if she'll make it to middle-age, given that her habits have not changed the slightest.

Colorado is about to be hit by a "blizzard bomb cyclone." This'll be interesting. It's snowing.
I have discovered what I'm 95% sure is a bug with the new custom boxes...but I like what it does...so? :paranoid:
Do I like the new custom boxes? Nope. Did I still force them to do what I want. Yep. I WILL MAKE MY PAGE AS PRETTY AS I DARN WELL PLEASE.

The more contrast checks I do on various elements of Eclipse the more failures I find. Not meeting ADA standards AT ALL in many, many areas.

I'm gonna try to make more tutorials this year, so which ones would you be most interested in?

Thanks for dropping by <3

Yeah, you can probably tell from a look why I wouldn't mind the idea of a dog in place of a heart...
